Kiryu Can't Escape His Past In Yakuza: Like A Dragon's New Trailer

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent navigating the gritty underworld of Yakuza, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and nostalgia as I watch the trailer for Like a Dragon: Yakuza on Prime Video. The series promises to deliver an immersive experience that seamlessly blends the intensity of the original games with the cinematic charm of live-action storytelling.

Previously released trailers of the live-action series on Prime Video’s Like a Dragon: Yakuza didn’t reveal much except for some exaggerated action scenes. However, as the premiere date is fast approaching (less than a month away), a fresh trailer has been unveiled, giving fans who are enthusiasts of the original Sega games an authentic glimpse into what they can expect.

Ryoma Takeuchi portrays Kazuma Kiryu, the central figure from the initial Yakuza games, who serves as the primary focus of the series. This narrative unfolds across two distinct timeframes. In 1995, Kazuma, alongside his companions Yumi (Yumi Kawai) and Miho (Hinano Nakayama), are a group of impulsive youths daring enough to attempt to rob an arcade controlled by the Dojima crime family. They’re also naive enough to believe they can escape with an enormous sum of money, far greater than anything they’ve encountered before. Throughout this narrative thread, Kazuma will eventually become involved with the yakuza.

In 2005, Kazuma finds himself out of prison and no longer affiliated with the yakuza. However, his past with his old clan will always linger, and even his former friends seem hesitant to rekindle their relationship with him. Simultaneously, a mysterious figure is weaving a plan that involves both the city’s competing yakuza groups.

On October 24, Amazon Prime Video is set to debut the first trio of episodes from the series “Like a Dragon: Yakuza”, with the rest being rolled out weekly thereafter. The sequel to this game, titled “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii”, is scheduled for release on February 28, 2025.
