Kirby Air Riders announced 22 years after the original

For several years now, Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of “Super Smash Bros.”, has been secretively working on a project. To keep everyone guessing, he’s been releasing YouTube videos that were actually recorded years ago. The surprise was finally unveiled today, revealing that the project wasn’t another installment in the “Super Smash Bros.” series as many had speculated, even during the trailer for Kirby Air Riders.

Kirby Air Riders announced twenty-two years after the original game, with Sakurai directing

As I eagerly watched the trailer unfold, it started with an ominous darkness, and there was poor Kirby, struggling to ignite a warp star while plummeting through the air. It felt like a throwback to some of the thrilling Super Smash Bros. Ultimate trailers, where Kirby is the lone survivor, battling to rescue the rest of the roster. But just when things seemed dire, he safely landed, and to my delight, I was warmly welcomed by other characters zipping past on all sorts of vehicles, revealing the heart of the announcement.

Back in 2003, the first Kirby Air Ride came out on the Nintendo GameCube, quite fittingly considering today’s other Nintendo announcements. This upcoming sequel has been a long-awaited twenty-two years in the making. Interestingly enough, while Sakurai is known for developing the popular series, Super Smash Bros., his first claim to fame was actually creating the Kirby character. This new game represents a return to his roots for Sakurai, and it’s an exciting day for fans of the Kirby franchise as well, since 2022’s Kirby and the Forgotten Land also announced DLC that will be exclusive to the Switch 2.

Over the past few years, the classic game known as Kirby Air Ride has gained a dedicated group of enthusiasts who appreciate its multiplayer aspect. In this game, players race around an urban landscape, collecting power-ups and changing vehicles in an attempt to outmaneuver and defeat their opponents. As someone who cherishes my memories of playing this game during my childhood, it’s thrilling to witness the idea being revisited after so much time has passed. At the moment, there isn’t a definitive launch date for Kirby Air Riders, but the trailer hinted at a potential release in 2025.
