The second season of Daredevil: Born Again is returning the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the realistic, street-level action of New York City. However, Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Kingpin, has explained why Jon Bernthal won’t be reprising his role as the Punisher.
Okay, so the story starts right after Kingpin basically took over the city. He declared martial law, meaning no more heroes or anyone trying to fight crime on their own. And to enforce it, he’s sending out this special task force – it’s like his own personal army to hunt down anyone breaking the rules. It’s a total crackdown!
The second season focuses on Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil (Charlie Cox), building a full-scale rebellion against Kingpin, the city’s powerful mayor. He even brings in Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) to assist in freeing New York from the villain’s control. Rumors are swirling that other heroes, like Spider-Man, might appear, fueled by fans noticing Daredevil’s absence from a recent trailer.
The Punisher won’t be in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, and actor Jon Bernthal’s absence from the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been explained by Charlie D’Onofrio.
Vincent D’Onofrio says Jon Bernthal was too busy making The Punisher special and Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Vincent D’Onofrio shared that Jon Bernthal couldn’t be in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again because he was already committed to filming The Punisher special and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He explained this on X (formerly Twitter) after a fan expressed disappointment about The Punisher’s absence from the show.
He explained that if John hadn’t been occupied with his personal Punisher film and another project, they would have definitely asked him to be part of Season 2. However, he’s happy John pursued those other opportunities and is excited to see what he does with them.
Viewers anticipated the Punisher’s return after Frank Castle escaped from Fisk’s prison at the end of the last season – he broke a guard’s arm and likely took the keys. While it’s unknown where he went after escaping, he won’t be helping Daredevil fight the Kingpin in the upcoming season.
You’ll see Jon Bernthal as the Punisher when he appears in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day film starring Tom Holland. He makes a quick appearance in the trailer, colliding with Spider-Man’s van while pursuing a tank. The two characters exchange some playful words before Spider-Man prevents the Punisher from using foul language by webbing him in the face.
There’s a chance The Punisher could appear in the third season of Daredevil: Born Again. According to showrunner Dario Scardapane, the show will reveal what’s next for the series in the last few minutes of Season 2.
