As a long-time fan of Todd McFarlane and the Spawn universe, I’m absolutely thrilled to hear about the progress being made on the upcoming reboot of the Spawn movie franchise. It’s been a long time coming, with McFarlane teaming up with Blumhouse back in 2017 to develop the next chapter in the antihero’s story. And now, we finally have a title for the script – “King Spawn” – and a trio of talented screenwriters, Matt Mixon, Malcolm Spellman, and Scott Silver, at the helm.
At the San Diego Comic-Con event on Thursday, Todd McFarlane, the mastermind behind “Spawn,” provided new information about the forthcoming revival of this iconic antihero comics series.
The new “Spawn” film has been under production for close to ten years now. In 2017, Todd McFarlane joined forces with Jason Blum’s company, Blumhouse, to create the subsequent installment of the man-turned-Hellspawn’s saga. Since then, in 2018, Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx agreed to take on the lead role as the antihero title character.
On Monday, McFarlane and Blum shared on social media a peek at the script’s title page for “King Spawn,” penned by Matt Mixon, Malcolm Spellman (“Falcon and the Winter Soldier”), and Scott Silver (“Joker”). Their post generated excitement as McFarlane was set to appear in Ballroom 20 on Thursday afternoon.
McFarlane commended the team of screenwriters, stating during the discussion, “They’ve stayed faithful to my essence.” Regarding the plot, he merely instructed them, “Make it awesome. Keep it awesome, and I’ll tag along. They’ve produced an awe-inspiring script that I believe will captivate global audiences, even those unfamiliar with ‘Spawn’ or Todd McFarlane.”
McFarlane assured an unconventional and distinctive portrayal of the character, deviating from the norm and carrying an R-rating.

McFarlane shared that once the draft is finalized, the filmmakers will focus on selecting a suitable director for the upcoming project. However, he remains attentive to the ticket sales of the latest R-rated comic book release, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which hit theaters this weekend.
McFarlane expressed his belief that the upcoming Marvel movie would be a huge box office success. On Monday, it is expected to set a significant earnings record, prompting Hollywood to take notice and consider producing more R-rated comic book adaptations. I’ve long advocated for this trend, and now it seems the industry is catching up.
The upcoming release of “Joker 2” by Warners Bros. in October is predicted to further boost the industry, bringing good news for the makers of “Spawn” and their R-rated production. However, McFarlane pointed out that they’re not simply following Marvel or DC’s blueprint.)
McFarlane explained that trying to create a less complex version of Marvel or DC’s superhero universe for Spawn wouldn’t be successful. He recalled conversations with screenwriters where they emphasized the need to develop their unique and distinctive take on Spawn. Image Comics, according to McFarlane, offers a diverse range of stories that sets it apart from Marvel and DC. Therefore, it is crucial to have a bold studio that understands they’re not producing a watered-down version of the industry giants but rather their own original production.
Starting in 1992, the Spawn comics introduced Al Simmons’ metamorphosis from a human into the Hellspawn, granting him extraordinary powers such as superhuman strength and speed, and near immortality. Additionally, Al could teleport, transform into different shapes, and heal wounds rapidly. In 1997, New Line brought Al’s origin story to life on the big screen with Michael Jai White starring in the film, making it one of the first major comic book superheroes played by an African American actor. HBO produced an animated series for three seasons that received two Emmy Awards. Furthermore, McFarlane Toys created a line of action figures based on this iconic character.
At the panel, McFarlane discussed various “Spawn” comic series. Among them were “Rat City,” “No Home Here,” “Spawn vs. All Spawns,” “Medieval Spawn,” “Gunslinger’s Tales of Vengeance,” “She Spawn,” and “The Freak” (authored by McFarlane himself), as well as “Violator.”
McFarlane brought David Dastmalchian (known for “The Suicide Squad” and “Oppenheimer”) onto the stage to talk about their upcoming comic book collaboration, “Knights vs. Samurai.” Excitedly, Dastmalchian shared that he’s been a devoted fan of McFarlane for years, making the chance to work together on a project particularly exciting for him.
“Does anyone here enjoy metal fantasy with a medieval twist or fantasy samurai tales? Picture this: these two captivating realms collide for the first time in a thrilling saga. Prepare for an exhilarating adventure filled with dragons, oni, witches, knights, and samurai, as they engage in epic battles unlike anything you’ve experienced before.”
