King of Meat Is a Bland Game, but With Potential to Positively Surprise

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that King of Meat piques my interest, but also leaves me with a few concerns. The weapon progression system and cosmetic customization options are intriguing, reminiscent of games like Diablo or Borderlands. However, the potential for friendly fire and the reliance on other players to complete missions have me feeling a bit skeptical.

Hey there fellow gamers! After seeing the response to our last MMO game, it seems we need a change. This time around, I’m thrilled to tell you that Amazon Games is stepping into new territory with an entirely different genre. We’re not just aiming to create another run-of-the-mill game; we’re looking for something fresh and exciting! Let’s see what this new adventure brings us!

Upon attending the “King of Meat” television program, I found it to resemble a children’s game more than anything else. The show’s format and whimsical graphics appeared designed to appeal to young viewers. This perception was strengthened by characters that seemed like a fusion between popular games such as Fortnite and Fall Guys, featuring elements that were undeniably appealing.

Let’s look at the pros: at least it’s not an extraction shooter

I can hardly recall the last instance when a game’s trailer failed to spark any interest within me as much as King of Meat‘s did. Despite hinting at its theme, the trailer fell short in evoking any emotions. With its debut at this year’s gamescom, the game is now available for public viewing, leaving many prospective players with merely a trailer and some screenshots to go by.

It’s not just about being remembered, I can vouch for that from my own experiences. Although it may initially seem ordinary, the game titled “King of Meat” is actually quite engaging once you start playing it. Unfortunately, many people might be reluctant to try it out because it won’t be a free game. The developers have classified it as a “mid-price premium” title, which means it will likely cost around 30-40 dollars.

It seems to me that making the game free-to-play (F2P) could increase its chances of success due to the inclusion of cosmetic microtransactions. This free distribution model could potentially draw more players in. Notably, cross-play functionality is planned, allowing both console and PC users to play together, thereby enhancing the opportunity for finding gaming partners.

What is King of Meat about?

In the world of “King of Meat,” this popular TV show is what we’re aiming to excel at and claim the title of “Meat King.” “King of Meat” is a team-based platform game that emphasizes setting and breaking records, whether you play with others or solo.

A significant aspect is the leaderboard, showcasing top performers on prominent displays. Here, you can examine your stats for every map and engage in friendly competition with other gamers. Additionally, King of Meat will incorporate a story campaign; however, the game’s primary emphasis lies on multiplayer interaction, encouraging player creativity.

Contrary to its unassuming start, King of Meat proves itself to be a kick-ass game! The goal here is simple: rush through the stages as swiftly as we can, with minimal deaths and max points in tow. Points are stacked up by snatching treasures, vanquishing foes, staying alive, and completing levels in record time. The map indicates that one to four combatants can dive into the fray, but the game’s mechanics are optimized for a squad of four.

1. The maps on display offered a mix of adversaries to conquer, intricate platform challenges, and hazards – often simultaneously.

In the absence of this crucial aspect, the “King of Meat” might easily grow restless. Yet, this vacuum offers a platform for artistic individuals to excel. Upon crafting a stage, participants can trial it; if it garners positive feedback from the community, it becomes an integral part of the game. Certain stages could potentially find their way into Komstruct Coliseum – a battleground for ranked matches. If this area resonates with players and its theme aligns with the overarching theme of a specific season, it might become a popular choice.

One key strength of “King of Meat” lies in its intuitive control system. For the testing phase, an Xbox controller was employed, and the game’s various actions like moving, jumping, dodging, and fighting were assigned to buttons in a manner that makes these actions feel fluid and effortless. Given the game’s emphasis on platforming, the weapons and special attacks do not convey a significant sense of weight or power. However, the developers attempted to create this illusion during two-handed hammer combat, but it fell short of expectations. Contrary to anticipation, I found the game’s movement mechanics somewhat comparable to those in “Fall Guys“. In “King of Meat“, the control system offers greater precision and is highly responsive; actions displayed on screen occur instantaneously after button presses. The tests were carried out in a controlled setting, but the performance under heavy server loads remains to be seen.

All players meet in one place

As we embark on our journey beneath the surface, it’s crucial to get ready for combat. The Ironlaw Plaza serves as our central gathering place, where we interact with other players and purchase essential items and powerful abilities, such as necromancy for team healing or a shield that redirects enemy attacks. Throughout the gameplay, various types of currencies are amassed – some earned through accomplishments, while others are won by clinching the gold cup at the end of specific maps.

Moving forward, we plan to swap out the weaponry in our central station, featuring multiple types for variety. In our initial trials, we’ve only had the chance to evaluate the shield in conjunction with a sword (rapid strikes against a single foe) and a two-handed hammer (slow, wide-area attacks). Moreover, we possess a crossbow or grenade launcher, but the utility of long-range weapons like these can be as contextually specific as the use of ranged weapons in ‘The Witcher 3’.

As a gamer, I’m leveling up my main weapons, which means their unique attacks pack a bigger punch or reach further. However, it seems the advancement is weapon-specific only, as my character’s appearance remains unchanged and the new armor doesn’t boost any stats. A cool touch is the customizable accessories that can be scaled up or down, making me stand out among the masses.

As a devoted player, I’m thrilled to share that Ironlaw Plaza offers healing potions for purchase, which can either amplify the damage I deal or lessen the impact of trap and explosion damage. This versatility enables me to strategize effectively for various maps, knowing there are always three distinct options to select from. The team then collaborates to decide on our preferred playground.

My worries about King of Meat

The game “King of Meat” is currently under development, so some of my concerns might be resolved down the line, but for now, it appears that certain issues may persist. I have a feeling that cheaters could potentially target “King of Meat” quite quickly. The game employs Easy Anti-Cheat, although it’s not known for being highly effective.

Friendly fire poses a tricky predicament that could result in unwanted outcomes, like in the game King of Meat, where you may accidentally hurt your allies. I encountered this the most on a level with another player and me fighting skeletons, while other team members rained down explosive barrels from afar, causing us more harm than the skeletons.

Engaging with friends in a game is always a delightful experience. But it’s important to note that playing with strangers online might not provide the same level of enjoyment due to potential issues like griefing and team abandonment. This problem is linked to another, as the developers have stated that they don’t intend to auto-assign players to ongoing missions at this time. If we don’t have a full four-player team, the game ends because certain button presses for opening gates are required. The game “King of Meat” will feature a system for reporting toxic players, but it remains uncertain how efficient Glowmade will be in dealing with such issues. Part of the moderation process is automated, which brings its own advantages and disadvantages.

King of Meat’s future is unclear

Previously mentioned player base might be our primary worry. King of Meat doesn’t prompt you to purchase it – conversing with other invited players at the event, I discovered that I wasn’t alone in feeling this way. The gameplay showcased the game’s potential, however, what it seems to be missing for a fun, engaging experience is a split-screen multiplayer mode.

To enjoy playing King of Meat with others, it’s essential to find individuals who are interested in buying the game. This could potentially occur if a well-known streamer showcases the game to a wider audience. However, I’m not overly optimistic about its success, although I truly hope I’m wrong. The marketing strategy for this game primarily focuses on its comedic aspects within the gameplay.

If Glowmade effectively enhances the creative mode by enabling the development of complex and exciting levels, it has a strong chance of outshining “New World” in terms of popularity. Specifically, this could attract speedrunners due to the inclusion of internal stat tables, allowing them to compete with others.
