Previously, director Guy Ritchie and the star of “Sons of Anarchy” worked together on a medieval fantasy movie that raked in $148 million at the box office when it debuted in 2017. Now, this film is getting another opportunity to shine as it finds its new home on a streaming platform.
Beginning on May 1st, the movie “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” will become available for streaming on Peacock. This film is based on the well-known tale of King Arthur and was directed by Ritchie, with Hunnam taking up the lead role as the king himself. Jude Law, who you might recognize from “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” played the part of King Vortigern, Arthur’s adversary. Additionally, stars such as Aiden Gillen (from “Game of Thrones”), Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey (from “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”), Djimon Hounsou (“A Quiet Place: Day One”), and Eric Bana (“Hulk”) were also part of the cast.
Despite earning approximately $150 million, the film was costly to produce with a budget of $175 million (excluding marketing expenses). This high cost thwarted aspirations for sequels and any potential franchise starring Hunnam as King Arthur. The Rotten Tomatoes rating came in at 31%, but the audience score showed a significant contrast, standing at 69%. Many viewers argue that the film is undervalued, yet Hunnam himself expressed interest in redoing the movie if given a chance.
Charlie Hunnam Says the Film Didn’t Live Up to Its Potential
In reflecting upon my experience portraying King Arthur, I find myself yearning to revisit the production as there were several aspects that didn’t go as intended. Many factors beyond our control influenced the outcome, and one significant element was a miscasting decision that adversely impacted the core narrative – fortunately, this aspect has been eliminated from the final film.
Hunnam didn’t specify which character he believed was incorrectly cast, but he did note, “I believe our vision for the film didn’t quite align with reality – we fell short of making the movie we had hoped for. If the film had been successful, we were planning on producing more films in this series, and I’ve always been fascinated by the Arthurian legends. I genuinely feel that we missed a chance to create an extended narrative.
In my humble opinion as a film critic, despite his role as King Arthur being fleeting, Hunnam is poised for more captivating roles. He’s slated to delve into the chilling life of a real-life murderer and grave robber in the third season of Ryan Murphy’s gripping Netflix anthology series, “Monster.” Additionally, Hunnam will grace our screens in the upcoming crime drama series, “Criminal,” which is adapted from Ed Brubaker’s original comic book. Over the past few years, Hunnam has graced our screens with his presence in Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” and in the Apple TV+ series, “Shantaram.
