As a longtime fan who has followed Luffy’s adventures since his debut, I must admit that my perspective on whether he is a hero or not has been a rollercoaster ride. While it’s true that Luffy’s bravery and loyalty are undeniable, his actions sometimes leave me questioning his heroism.
We cannot deny that Luffy is brave and loyal, he will do everything to defend his friends, however, is this enough to call him a hero? While it’s true that he has done many noble things, he is still a pirate with a history of wrongdoing.
Chapter 1131 of One Piece prompted fans to discuss whether Luffy is actually a hero. It resulted from a post by user Geo_AW, who wrote: “Kinda lost respect for Luffy cause swinging on a guy in chains who can’t defend himself kinda low.” This includes when Luffy attacked a chained Loki who called Shanks a “cowardly pirate,” provoking the Straw Hat captain.
In the comments section, numerous supporters stood up for Luffy, justifying his actions by pointing out he’s a pirate and such underhand tactics are to be expected. Nevertheless, it was noted that Luffy isn’t as morally upright as many believe, with instances of him striking a woman or setting free vile criminals. Consequently, these individuals argued that assaulting Loki, even when he’s unarmed, aligns perfectly with Luffy’s behavior when provoked by an insult to his comrade. However, it was also acknowledged by some that Luffy didn’t perform at his peak this time.
In other words, Luffy often lets dangerous individuals like killers, human traffickers, and others of ill repute go free. This is typical for Luffy, which makes it amusing when people genuinely attempt to portray him as a saintly or morally upright figure – HeroDarkyDark.
