As a seasoned cinephile who’s seen more than a few sunsets on the silver screen, I must say that the news of Kevin Spacey’s return to acting in “The Contract” is a fascinating twist in an already intriguing career. The Italian indie thriller, with its Al Pacino-esque Satanic lawyer character, seems to be right up Spacey’s alley – or should I say, the Devil’s?
The independent Italian thriller titled “The Contract,” featuring Kevin Spacey portraying the role of “The Devil,” is scheduled for its global debut at the Cairo Film Festival this week. However, Spacey will not be present at the red carpet event in the Egyptian Opera House.
In the movie, Spacey portrays a character reminiscent of Al Pacino’s role in “Devil’s Advocate,” where he plays Satan disguised as a human lawyer. The tagline for the poster of “The Contract” is “When Hell Encircles You, The Devil Becomes Your Last Resort.
In the preview, it appears to be a modestly produced television film. The character portrayed by Spacey is shown shouting phrases like: “I sense it when they deliberately deceive me, and it drives me mad!” and “I’m indifferent about the past, it’s all behind us now!
The psychological thriller, titled “Italy’s Massimo Paolucci’s directorial work,” features Eric Roberts and Vincent Spano in its star-studded cast. This intriguing film is set to premiere in Cairo on November 14th. The Italian crew behind this production includes Director Massimo Paolucci, Producer Massimiliano Caroletti, along with actors Jennifer Caroletti, Mercedesz Henger, and Fabrizio Eleuteri.
Roberts portrays a struggling, self-centered journalist named Giuseppe, desperately seeking a sensational story to reignite his faltering career. In his relentless pursuit of this scoop, Giuseppe encounters “The Devil,” who offers assistance but ultimately discovers that he has been deceived throughout by the character portrayed by Spacey, as suggested in the given synopsis.
In 2017, the career of the “House of Cards” actor crumbled under accusations of sexual misconduct, but later, in October 2022, he was cleared of charges brought by “Star Trek: Discovery” actor Anthony Rapp. Additionally, he was also declared not guilty in a U.K. sexual assault trial that took place in July 2023.
In March, Kevin Spacey reappeared on U.S. cinema screens with the independent thriller “Peter Five Eight,” co-starring Rebecca de Mornay. The film received generally unfavorable reviews from critics and represented Spacey’s first major role following his acquittal in the London trial.
Paolucci’s past projects feature the action film “All in One Day,” available on Prime Video in Italy, as well as the horror-crime movie “Medium” and the slasher/horror flick “Photoshock.” Additionally, he has worked as a line producer on Dario Argento’s critically panned film “Dracula 3D.” The production team behind “The Contract” consists of Massimiliano Caroletti from TM Entertainment and Sandro Lazzerini.
Following a hiatus from acting, Spacey re-entered the world of filmmaking in 2017. He took on the role of a police detective in the independent Italian drama “The Man Who Drew God,” directed by Franco Nero. Additionally, he lent his voice to Gene Fallaize’s indie thriller “Control.
