The Marvel Cinematic Universe consistently churns out fresh content, be it in movie theaters or through streaming services like Disney+. After Disney bought 20th Century Fox and its assets, Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, was finally able to join the action… but it wasn’t until years later that Deadpool and Wolverine appeared on screen (and set new box office records). The creator of the character, Rob Liefeld, recently provided a theory about Kevin Feige as to why fans had to wait so long.
Before its premiere, the upcoming Marvel movie featuring Deadpool and Wolverine was one of the most eagerly awaited films set to hit theaters. Yet it may come as a shock that the studio delayed so much in giving the green light for the third installment. During an interview on the Millar Time podcast, Liefeld shared some claims about why Marvel was reluctant to move forward with this project. In his own words:
It seemed like [Feige] found it difficult to accept that [Deadpool] wasn’t part of his own franchise. For years, I was told by my Disney sources – do you want to know why there is a gap of six years between Deadpool 2 and Deadpool 3? Because [Feige] didn’t want to produce it. He only agreed to do so because he had suffered multiple flops, and they were like, “We need to give this project the green light.
Indeed, that’s one possible account of the events surrounding Deadpool. For now, let’s consider it a rumor given Liefeld’s stance on Feige. However, if true, it might provide some insight into the studio’s dynamics. It’s peculiar how long it took before Deadpool and Wolverine began production, isn’t it?

Stream the Deadpool series, as well as other Marvel Cinematic Universe content, on Disney+! Prices start at just $9.99 per month for their new ad-supported plan. If you prefer an ad-free experience, it’s $15.99 a month, or save 16% and pre-pay $159.99 annually to enjoy a year of uninterrupted streaming. Take advantage of this offer now!
Although Liefeld’s account may be speculation, he does bring up some compelling arguments. It’s worth noting that since Avengers: Endgame broke box office records and became the highest grossing movie ever, there have been several MCU films that didn’t perform as well. For instance, The Marvels underperformed at the box office, while Ant-Man 3 also faced difficulties in terms of ticket sales.
Apart from movies that didn’t perform well in cinemas, films such as Eternals and Thor: Love and Thunder also fell short with viewers. This must have put a lot of strain on the studio, but the success of Deadpool and Wolverine came just when it was needed, making Liefeld’s claims about Kevin Feige in this regard seem plausible.

Based on the massive turnout for Deadpool 3, it’s safe to say that we can expect Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds to reprise their roles in future projects. Despite not being mentioned in the cast announcement for Avengers: Doomsday, fans are eagerly anticipating their potential involvement in the Avengers franchise.
Right now, you can find the “Deadpool” series streaming on Disney+. On July 25th, 2025, the next Marvel Cinematic Universe film set to hit theaters is titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“. It’s one of the upcoming movies scheduled for release that year.
