Kevin Feige Says Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine Return Proves That Robert Downey Jr. Coming Back as Iron Man ‘Can Be Done — If Great Care Is Taken’

As a dedicated cinephile who has followed the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) closely since its inception, I’m both thrilled and intrigued by the possibility of Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Iron Man and Chris Evans’ potential comeback as Captain America. Kevin Feige’s recent statement that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine” sets a precedent for the MCU legends to make a comeback is an exciting development, indeed.

In an interview with DiscussingFilm, Kevin Feige hinted that Hugh Jackman’s comeback as Wolverine in “Deadpool & Wolverine” could potentially pave the way for Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Iron Man or Chris Evans’ return as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Feige expressed that finding the right approach to bring back Downey and Evans while preserving the past and excelling was a significant challenge for Wolverine, which they’ve been working on for over two years. Regarding future plans, he remained coy and optimistic about their success with Wolverine. Hugh Jackman’s involvement in “Deadpool & Wolverine” is a promising indication that such collaborations can be executed effectively if handled with care.

Downey and Evans departed from the “Avengers: Endgame” franchise in 2019, marking Downey’s character, Iron Man/Tony Stark, meeting his end. Jackman concluded his run as Logan/Wolverine in the critically-acclaimed “Logan” (2017), with Jackman expressing no desire to reprise the role due to potential disruption of “Logan’s” established narrative. Since the announcement of his return, Jackman has reassured fans that the new project will respect the original timeline.

Jackman shared with SiriusXM in December 2022 that in the Marvel realm, they employ a device for time-travel. As a result, he can return without affecting the “Logan” narrative, which was crucial for him and probably fans as well.)

In a different take on his iconic role as Wolverine, Jackman offers an intriguing possibility – might Downey’s portrayal of Iron Man/Tony Stark undergo similar transformations in the future? Feige, in an interview with Vanity Fair last December, emphasized that just as Jackman and “Logan” strayed from the traditional path, he had no intention of altering Downey’s exit in “Avengers: Endgame.”

“Feige expressed that we should cherish and not repeat Iron Man’s demise, as it was the result of much effort and dedication from all involved. We are committed to preserving the significance of that event.”

Downey has freely expressed this year his desire to rejoin Marvel. Following his Oscar victory for “Oppenheimer” in Esquire, he was questioned about the possibility of re-entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Without a moment’s pause, Downey affirmatively responded.

“I’m thrilled to admit it. That character fits me like a glove. I once joked, ‘Never underestimate Kevin Feige.’ It’s a risky wager. He’s in control. And trust me, he usually comes out on top.”

The directors of “Avengers: Endgame” featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Anthony and Joe Russo, are in discussions with Marvel to direct the next two Avengers movies. However, they have previously expressed uncertainty about how to bring back their previous leading man since they had killed off Iron Man in “Endgame.”

“I don’t know how they would do it,” Anthony said. “I don’t know what the road to that would be.”

Joe added, “I mean we closed that book so it would be up to them to figure out how to reopen it.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe next continues with “Deadpool & Wolverine,” in theaters July 26.
