Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Sets Max Release Date After Box Office Flop

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for Westerns, I must say that Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1” is a tale as old as the West itself, albeit with a modern twist. With such an impressive roster of talent and the legendary Costner at the helm, it seems like a recipe for success. However, the first installment’s box office performance leaves much to be desired, and the uncertainty surrounding the series’ continuation is palpable.

Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1” is coming to Max on August 23rd, bringing the wild west right into your living room.

The initial part of his western movie franchise, in which he acted, shared direction, scriptwriting, production, and funding, portrays the lives of multiple characters in the American West during and post the Civil War. Costner envisioned the “Horizon” storyline to encompass four films, with the first two being filmed concurrently; however, following the first film’s poor box office performance, it remains uncertain how the series will progress further.

The second installment in the “Horizon” series had its release date for August 16th in cinemas postponed, following the disappointing box office performance of the first film which made just $11 million during its opening weekend despite a budget of around $100 million. Costner revealed that he personally invested $38 million to fund the movie. Instead, “Horizon Chapter 2” will have its premiere as an out-of-competition entry at the Venice Film Festival on September 7th.

A representative from New Line Cinema shared with EbMaster that they’ve chosen to delay the release of the second ‘Horizon’ film. This move aims to provide more time for viewers to explore the initial installment of ‘Horizon’, which will be available on Premium Video On Demand and Max during the upcoming weeks.

The actors Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Thomas Haden Church complete the ensemble of this western movie.

The initial movie in the series debuted on Premium Video On Demand (PVOD) on July 16, approximately a month following its theater release on June 28.

In May, Costner began filming the third installment of the series, then temporarily halted work to publicize the initial movie. It was anticipated that production on “Chapter 3” would resume in August, and core team members had already received the script for the concluding film number four.
