As a seasoned movie buff who’s witnessed the rise and fall of many a silver screen legend, I must say that Kevin Costner’s journey is one for the books. His ability to captivate audiences across decades with his raw talent and unwavering dedication to his craft is truly remarkable.
In the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, the second part of Kevin Costner’s Western series “Horizon: An American Saga” received a prolonged, three-minute standing ovation. Following this, both the director and the star were swarmed by eager fans.
Just three minutes after Costner’s “Horizon 2” received applause, he was surrounded by eager fans and subsequently escorted out by security. The second installment of “Horizon,” titled “Chapter Two,” premiered at the festival’s Sala Giardino – a smaller venue compared to Sala Grande, which is usually reserved for gala premieres but was occupied tonight with Venice’s awards ceremony.
Prior to departing, Kevin Costner embraced Susan Sarandon, his co-star from “Bull Durham.” She planted a kiss on his cheek and offered him words of congratulations. Earlier in the week, they had crossed paths once more at the Better World Fund’s charity event held at the Cipriani Hotel in Venice.
Horizon 2″ unexpectedly joined Venice’s roster, announced on July 31 that it would make its out-of-competition debut on the final day of the festival. Prior to this announcement, the U.S. release for “Chapter 2”, initially set for August 16, was postponed following the underwhelming box office performance of the franchise’s first installment. Despite a budget of approximately $100 million, its opening weekend earnings were only $11 million.
During a press conference over the weekend, I shared my thoughts on the delayed theatrical release of our movie, explaining it was likely a response to the underwhelming box office performance of the initial film. I admitted that it didn’t achieve the massive success we had hoped for. However, I’ve been through this before with other films, and I believe many of them have proven their worth over time.
Nevertheless, Costner revealed his intention to proceed with the creation of the subsequent two movies in the series, hinting that the scripts for them are already completed, suggesting that “Chapter Three” holds a shockingly impactful storyline.
“I don’t know how I’m going to make ‘Three’ right now,” he said. “But I’m going to make it.”
Kevin Costner once more takes on both director and lead roles in “Chapter Two,” joined by a familiar ensemble that includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, and Danny Huston. The narrative follows the continuation of events from the initial chapter, offering a complex portrayal of the American West’s expansion during the Civil War era, often referred to as an “epic depiction.” Costner also collaborated on the script with Jon Baird (“The Explorers Guild”) and served as producer through his production company, Territory Pictures.
