As a cinephile with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the recent turn of events in Yellowstone has left me both intrigued and perplexed. The departure of John Dutton, played by the legendary Kevin Costner, is a significant shift for the show, one that has left many fans questioning the direction it will take.
WARNING: This tale includes revelations from Season 5 Episode 9 that premiered on November 10th on Paramount Network. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers!
In Sunday’s premiere of Yellowstone’s Season 5 Part 2, John Dutton was written out of the story, but as of now, Kevin Costner has not had a chance to watch the episode.
In an interview on ‘The Michael Smerconish Program’ on SiriusXM this morning, Costner admitted he was completely truthful. He didn’t realize the show aired the previous night. It was an honest mistake, he swears to God. Despite seeing ads with his face everywhere, he thought, ‘I don’t think that’s me.’ He clarified that he isn’t part of this current season.
Costner, who parted ways with Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama following Season 5 Part 1, which debuted in November 2022, revealed that he learned about his character’s departure the day after the episode was broadcasted.
As a movie enthusiast, I haven’t had the chance to watch it yet. From what I’ve heard, it’s about a suicide, which isn’t exactly enticing me to catch up with it right away. When Smerconish mentioned that Dutton didn’t seem like the suicidal type, I simply said, “Well, they’re quite clever folks. Maybe it’s a misdirection. Who knows? They’re very skilled. And they’ll sort that out.
Costner mentioned that during the course of the series, there had been a few instances when he discussed potential endings for his character, but these scenarios didn’t involve suicide. However, he emphasized that it was up to the “Yellowstone” writers to decide how they would write Dutton off the show.
Concerning Dutton’s death, Costner was correct that the suicide theory was a distraction. In the show, John’s death wasn’t self-inflicted; instead, it was arranged by Sarah (played by Dawn Olivieri), a sinister fixer who has an affair with Jamie (Wes Bentley), John’s power-hungry son. Sarah orchestrated a hit on John through a secretive yet proficient organization. Despite her claims that he wouldn’t take his own life, the intermediary from the hit team suggests that suicide would make it appear easier to escape detection. They could stage a shooting scene and avoid excessive scrutiny during the autopsy by the toxicologists or other medical investigators.
In a different part of his conversation with Smerconish, Costner reaffirmed that he didn’t depart from “Yellowstone.” He maintains that the series cannot function according to his contractual obligations for the “Horizon” film series.
Costner stated that there were provisions in the contract which permitted both tasks, but due to the contractual nature of each task, scheduling conflicts arose. He explained that though there was available time, it proved challenging for them to accommodate their schedules. In essence, he said, it was simply too difficult for them to carry out the task.
Costner explained, “I found myself with 300 people relying on me, yet there was nothing more I could do for them. Regrettably, I couldn’t assist them any longer. However, I didn’t abandon the performance… It’s essential to honor your commitments in any line of work.
