Kevin Costner, Clint Eastwood, and More Remember Gene Hackman

A few days before the 97th Academy Awards, Tinseltown is in mourning following the demise of esteemed film icon Gene Hackman. Fellow actor Kevin Costner, who collaborated with the departed thespian on “No Way Out” and “Wyatt Earp,” reminisced about the subtle gestures of Hackman that significantly influenced his life and career. In a heartfelt Instagram post featuring a snippet from a past interview, Costner penned, “Gene Hackman was my favorite actor, and I was fortunate enough to work with him on multiple occasions. I’d like to share a tale that I recounted years ago with @richeisen—an encounter with Gene that underscored the depth of his generosity and vulnerability beyond his prodigious talent. This incident might have been minor for him, but it was monumental for me.

In the interview, Costner shared that Gene was the finest actor he’s collaborated with. This conversation took place during a disagreement between Costner and a director about their positions in a particular scene. As they were leaving the MGM studio, Hackman walked up to Costner, who thought he was going to receive criticism from the veteran star. However, instead of reprimanding him, Hackman said, “Hey, I’ve recently gone through a divorce and have been involved in some less-than-stellar projects. Watching you stand up for what you believe in today brought back memories of my passion for acting. Well done.” And with that, Hackman got into his car and drove away.

Clint Eastwood, who collaborated with him on “Unforgiven” and “Absolute Power,” expressed his sorrow in a short statement about the death of Gene Hackman: “I’m deeply saddened by the loss of Gene Hackman, he will be greatly missed…” Similar sentiments were shared by stars like Morgan Freeman and Ralph Fiennes.
