‘Kerala Story’ Director Unveils Ambitious Slate, Takes ‘Charak’ to Cannes Market (EXCLUSIVE)

The Indian filmmaker Sudipto Sen, recognized for his 2023 box office hit “The Kerala Story” that stirred debates, is now embarking on a series of ambitious plans under his fresh label Sipping Tea Cinemas. As his first project as a producer, “Charak – Fair of Faith,” moves forward to the Cannes Film Market.

Earlier this year, “Charak” was screened at the European Film Market in Berlin. This film plunges into the eerie crossroads of religion and traditional ceremonies, with a focus on the haunting intensity of the Charak Puja celebrated in certain areas of Bengal.

‘Charak’ is not just a movie; it serves as a thought-provoking exploration of the lengths people go for religious beliefs,” Sen stated. “This narrative compels us to face disturbing practices that are often taken for granted. My intention was to shed light on traditions that continue in specific social circles, often hidden beneath the veil of devotion.

Set within the burgeoning “folklore horror” category, this movie skillfully combines elements of suspense and social critique. It delves into narratives about missing children and tackles themes such as unconventional motherhood, camaraderie, childhood experiences, and parenthood.

In the up-and-coming “folklore horror” genre, this film masterfully intertwines tension with societal analysis. It unfolds tales of child abduction and delves into themes like non-traditional motherhood, friendship, childhood, and parenthood.

Sipping Tea Cinemas has an exciting lineup of upcoming films, featuring:

1. A sequel to the 2001 hit “Chandni Bar”
2. “Basera,” a political thriller set amidst the tumultuous Maoist-inspired Naxalist conflict
3. “The Eighth Note,” a biographical film about the renowned Carnatic singer M.S. Subbulakshmi
4. “People’s President,” focusing on India’s present-day President, Draupadi Murmu.

I’m captivated by the company’s ongoing projects, which include two intriguing series: “17 Days,” inspired by the harrowing true event of 41 workers trapped in the collapsed Silkyara-Barkot tunnel in Uttarakhand, and “Kashmir,” a multi-layered saga unfolding across multiple seasons that delves into the intricate complexities of the tumultuous region, set against the poignant backdrop of a love story.

In 2023, Sen’s movie “The Kerala Story” about ISIS recruitment caused quite a stir in India. It sparked disagreement among political figures, with some choosing to ban the film and others advocating for it. Despite this controversy, it became a significant box office hit, earning around $35 million.
