Kenyan Sci-Fi Series ‘Subterranea’ Set at Showmax, Trailer Unveiled (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned film enthusiast who has traversed the global cinematic landscape for decades, I must say that the upcoming Kenyan science fiction series “Subterranea” piques my interest like no other. Having witnessed the evolution of African cinema and its unique storytelling, it’s truly heartening to see an award-winning director like Likarion Wainaina pushing boundaries with his latest creation.

Renowned Kenyan filmmaker, Likarion Wainaina, graces Showmax once more with his latest creation, “Subterranea”, a captivating science fiction series. In anticipation of its release, Showmax has shared a trailer for this eight-episode production.

Wainaina, famous for his critically acclaimed superhero movie “Supa Modo,” assembles a group of Kenyan actors for this psychological drama set against the backdrop of an apocalyptic narrative. The plot revolves around eight characters who find themselves confined within an underground shelter following a worldwide disaster.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the stellar cast of our upcoming film includes Kalasha Award winners Foi Wambui (from “Crime and Justice”), Peter Kawa (“County 49”), and Nice Githinji (“The Caller”). Also gracing the screen are Melvin Alusa and Melissa Kiplagat, both recognized for their work in “Country Queen”. Making her acting debut is the talented filmmaker Philippa Ndisi-Herrmann, joined by Makena Kahuha (“Kina”), Biko Nyongesa (“Sense8”), Pauline Komu (“Groove Theory”), Dadson Gakenga, a Kenyan Theatre Award winner for his role in “Subira”, and the promising newcomer Chintu Chudasama.

In Kenya, as well as perhaps other regions, there’s a common misunderstanding that sci-fi solely pertains to the future or an abundance of laser weapons. However, science fiction can also delve into examining the influence of real or imagined science on human thoughts and actions. This is the essence of ‘Subterranea’, Wainaina explained. It’s not a depiction of the future, but rather a narrative where we ponder about scientific concepts and observe how our characters respond to them.

The television show is a collaborative production between Kibanda Pictures and creators Brian Munene and Wainaina. Martin Kigondu (“County 49”) and Arnold Mwanjila (“Taliya”) are also contributing writers to the series. Munene, who has previously worked on “Crime and Justice” and “County 49,” expressed that “Subterranea” delves into relatable human themes. The story centers around eight diverse characters who find themselves trapped in a bunker and must collaborate to survive, making themes of family and unity particularly prominent.

“In addition to themes of damaged institutions and mental health concerns, the series ‘Subterranea’ delves into questions like: ‘What hidden issues are prevalent within Kenyan society that often go unnoticed on television?’ This production aims to shed light on lesser-known issues such as male postpartum depression, PTSD among Kenya’s military personnel, and the effects of cults in Kenya on their followers.” (Munene explained)

MultiChoice Studios is responsible for selling “Subterranea” series globally, and it will make its debut on Showmax on the 26th of September.
