Kenneth Branagh, the director of the Thor films, has expressed interest in making a future Thor movie with a similar tone to James Mangold’s acclaimed film, Logan. He envisions a story that explores a more grounded and potentially mature direction for the Asgardian god.
It’s been fifteen years since Chris Hemsworth first played Thor, wielding his hammer Mjolnir, arriving on Earth, and battling his brother Loki.
Kenneth Branagh directed the first Thor movie, and while it was an unexpected pick, his experience with Shakespeare and stories of honor, betrayal, and forgiveness made him an ideal choice for the film.
Marvel wanted Kenneth Branagh to direct another Thor movie, but he declined. Subsequent films like Thor: The Dark World, Ragnarok, and Love and Thunder were made by other directors. However, Branagh feels he still has more to explore with the character and has some ideas for future stories.
Keneth Branagh wants to take Thor into “glorious twilight”

Director Kenneth Branagh recently told Business Insider that while he was excited about the possibility of directing a second Thor movie to commemorate the first film’s 15th anniversary, he ultimately declined the offer. He explained to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige that he didn’t feel he had the creative energy to do it justice.
But a decade and a half on, he feels ready to return to the franchise.
Branagh admits he’s tempted to wrap up his involvement with the Thor character. He’d always envisioned doing more with the story, perhaps something similar in tone to the film Logan. Ultimately, he’d like to see Chris Hemsworth and the rest of the cast get their own individual, satisfying conclusions to their characters’ journeys, allowing Thor to have a fitting farewell.

Branagh adds that he’s incredibly proud of the success of the actors he cast, including Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston.
You know, these characters have become so iconic, and we’ve all grown up with them. Seeing them finally get a proper send-off, a satisfying conclusion to their stories… that would be amazing. As a gamer, I’ve invested so much time with them, and honestly, I’d love to see them get the peaceful, meaningful ending they deserve. It would be really special.
Regarding directing future Marvel projects, Branagh explains that those plans are likely already established, given how far ahead the Marvel Universe is being planned. He feels there’s something special about finishing the story arc with the current characters and actors.
