As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve always admired Tom Cruise for leading the charge in some of Tinseltown’s grandest blockbusters. Yet, he continues to be an enigmatic figure, one of the most sought-after and elusive hitmakers in the industry. However, my esteemed colleague, Kenneth Branagh, who I shared screen time with in “Valkyrie,” suggests that Cruise’s contributions to cinema are still undervalued by some.
Kenneth Branagh will soon receive the BFI Fellowship, a highly esteemed accolade given by the British Film Institute to an actor or producer. Prior to this honor, The Times of London had a conversation with Branagh about the core values that make one of the most renowned film stars in history tick. However, according to Branagh, labeling Cruise as merely a movie star is not giving him proper credit.
Should he choose to step away from dazzling audiences with his on-screen exploits, he’ll undoubtedly astonish those who merely see him as a silver screen legend. His work in ‘Mission’ and ‘Top Gun’, blending cinematic excitement with a sincere purpose to make movie-going an unforgettable experience, is truly exceptional. Yet, his talent as an actor is often underappreciated – a period of outstanding performances awaits him.
Branagh added that Cruise, who frequently films projects in the U.K., enjoys good relations with the locals and is consistently warmly received during filming overseas.
In my own words, I’d say, “I often seek out a peaceful nook, soak up the ambiance, and remain courteous whenever attention comes my way. Laughter seems to come naturally to me, and I find immense joy in what I do. It appears this enthusiasm is contagious.
Upon learning about being bestowed with the BFI’s top acting award, Cruise expressed his deep gratitude. For more than four decades, he has been creating movies in the UK and has no intentions of slowing down.
