As an avid fan of Saturday Night Live (SNL), I must say that the life experiences of the cast members truly embody the spirit of the show. They have paid their dues, starting with humble beginnings and working their way up to becoming household names. It’s not just about the money; it’s about the passion, creativity, and camaraderie that drive these talented individuals to excel on the SNL stage.

Kenan Thompson explains to EbMaster that fresh faces joining “SNL” need to earn their way initially with their starting wages in the NBC comedy series.

Thompson stated at the American Museum of Natural History gala on Thursday that it’s often more important to have the job itself rather than the salary, adding, “you need to put in your time first.” He didn’t disclose specific figures about his earnings.

Thompson’s remark follows the news this week about his ex-castmate Pete Davidson, who disclosed that new actors on SNL typically receive approximately $3,000 per episode. Thompson, who was part of the SNL cast from 2014 to 2022 for eight seasons, commented in a New York Magazine video roundup, “I wonder if you folks are aware of what they pay us? I think I could have bought dinner with that money.

Jason Sudeikis expressed a comparable thought regarding his “SNL” earnings in the compilation video, stating, “In essence, it’s not enough to afford significant purchases.

On Thursday evening, Thompson was accompanied by SNL co-stars Bowen Yang, Colin Jost, Chloe Fineman, Sarah Sherman, Heidi Gardner, and Marcello Hernandez at a high-profile gala held at a New York City museum. Notable attendees also included Paul Mescal, who is set to make his SNL hosting debut this weekend, as well as Lorne Michaels, Scarlett Johansson, Steve Martin, Shaun Levy, Fred Armisen, Alec Baldwin, and others.

Following a quick walk on the red carpet, guests moved into the museum’s well-known “Whale Room.” Here, a dinner and an auction were held under the famous 21,000-pound blue whale replica, while everyone was seated.

At the event, Jost served as the evening’s emcee, and Senator Chuck Schumer began the proceedings by expressing his affection for New York City and his commitment to ensuring city museums are accessible to everyone. The auction commenced promptly, with guests placing their bids using glow sticks. Among the items up for grabs were a private astronomy lesson with Neil deGrasse Tyson and four tickets to an “SNL” show and after party – these attracted a winning bid of $100,000.

The grand event successfully garnered over $2.5 million, channeling these funds towards the museum’s educational initiatives and scientific studies.

Following dinner, Arcade Fire graced the stage for a lively performance of some of their most popular songs. Johansson, Jost, Armisen, Michaels, and the entire Saturday Night Live team joyfully danced to these hits in their seats, even tossing flowers onto the stage (and each other) as part of the fun.
