Keanu Reeves Took a Pause Mid-Interview and Got Choked Up When Asked About ‘The Matrix’ Turning 25: ‘It Changed My Life’ and ‘Many Other People’s Lives’

As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for the art of cinema, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of admiration for Keanu Reeves and his iconic role in “The Matrix.” The moment I read about his emotional reaction during an interview on The Late Show, where he paused to reflect on the film’s 25th anniversary, I was taken back to my own memories of first watching this groundbreaking masterpiece.

As a cinephile, I can’t help but be taken aback when I reflect on the fact that it’s been a quarter of a century since “The Matrix” graced our screens for the very first time. During a recent interview with Stephen Colbert on “The Late Show,” the topic came up, and in that moment, I found myself momentarily speechless. The passage of time seems to have slipped through my fingers like sand, leaving me in a state of mild shock as I struggled to find the eloquent words to express this remarkable milestone.

“The Matrix had a profound impact on my life, and over the years, it has touched and inspired so many others in wonderful and meaningful ways,” Reeves shared, collecting his thoughts. As an artist, one can only dream that their work brings about such influence.

Reeves seemed emotional as he continued, “The number of individuals who have shared with me how much ‘The Matrix’ has positively impacted them over the years is truly the best part for me.”

By the time “The Matrix” was released in 1999, Reeves had already gained recognition as an actor through films such as “Speed,” “Point Break,” and “My Own Private Idaho.” However, it was his portrayal of Neo in the Wachowski sisters’ production that skyrocketed him to international fame and solidified his status as a leading figure in the action movie genre. Reeves went on to appear in the sequels: “The Matrix Reloaded” (2003), “The Matrix Revolutions” (2003), and most recently, “The Matrix Resurrections” (2021).

In an interview on The Graham Norton Show in 2021, Reeves recalled receiving the proposition to reprise his role as Neo following an absence of eighteen years: “When the director proposed the idea of making another Matrix movie, I responded, ‘That’s a fantastic offer but I’m deceased.’ She asked, ‘Are you?’ and I jokingly replied, ‘Do enlighten me!’ She crafted a captivating plot, and I delight in portraying that character. The mystery of my survival will be disclosed.”
