As a moviegoer who grew up with a Sega Genesis and countless hours spent running through Green Hill Zone, I can confidently say that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a nostalgia-packed rollercoaster ride for anyone who’s ever felt the rush of collecting rings or dodging badniks. The latest installment in Sega’s Weird Alien Mammal Cinematic Universe brings back our speedy blue hero, Sonic, along with his pals Knuckles and Tails, to face a new threat: Shadow the Hedgehog.
As a massive fan, I can’t contain my excitement as Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen once more in “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”! This latest installment takes us deeper into the vibrant world of Sega’s Alien Mammal Cinematic Universe. In the trailer, our beloved characters – Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Knuckles (Idris Elba), and Miles “Tails” Prower (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) – join forces in a spectacular display of colorful camaraderie to combat a new danger to mankind: Shadow the Hedgehog.
The tale of Shadow originated in a manner similar to yours, Sonic, a soothing voice narrates in the trailer. However, where you discovered companionship and camaraderie, Shadow encountered only sorrow and heartache. As the speaker (potentially voiced by Tom Butler as Commander Walters) elaborates, Shadow is confined within some form of containment cell, with a young girl reaching out to him through the glass from beyond. This scene mirrors the imagery of Shadow’s past in both Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog, and if this is indeed the case, the girl might be Maria, Dr. Robotnik’s deceased granddaughter.
Discussing Robotnik, it’s Jim Carrey once again, this time sporting a beer belly and exhibiting a character resembling Gru. He teams up with the heroes, following a pattern seen in this franchise after Knuckles switched from combat to teamwork. The film is set post-Knuckles series on Paramount+, and in the trailer, Elba continues to enjoy voicing the straightforward tough-guy echidna with a hint of mirth.
