Katherine Heigl Says ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Ghost Sex Was ‘Confusing,’ Reunites With Jeffrey Dean Morgan to Discuss ‘Awkward’ Storyline: ‘She’s F—ing a Dead Guy?’

Katherine Heigl and Jeffrey Dean Morgan recently came together again after many years, for Entertainment Weekly’s 20-year celebration of Shondaland, and they candidly discussed one of “Grey’s Anatomy” most controversial plotlines: the ghost sex scenes between their characters. The romantic storyline between Izzie (Heigl) and Denny (Morgan), which unfolded in Season 2, significantly boosted the show’s fanbase and earned Heigl an Emmy award. However, when Denny returned as a ghost in Season 5, who Izzie interacts with and even has intimate scenes with, both actors and viewers were equally perplexed.

I found myself chuckling as I can’t recall many details from that particular season because it felt quite unusual – almost as if nobody was convinced it would work while we were filming it,” I confessed to Entertainment Weekly, echoing Heigl’s sentiments about the storyline being ‘awkward’.

Heigl stated that everyone found it perplexing. There’s a specific scene that he will never let his children see, regardless of their age. Even if they are 60, he won’t watch it with them. In this scene, you are present, but you’re trying to act as if you aren’t there. Alex (Justin Chambers) and Izzie start interacting inappropriately, and you’re just standing there. At the time, Heigl felt like, ‘I suppose this is what they paid me for.’

During filming, it was already being broadcast, and our initial feedback from the audience wasn’t particularly enthusiastic – more along the lines of ‘Wait, she’s seeing a ghost? What in the world is happening?’ Morgan joked, to which Heigl responded with a similar confusion: ‘She’s dating a ghost? What?’

Eventually, it became clear during the season that Izzie suffered from a brain tumor, leading her to imagine Denny. This revelation made Heigl more open to this storyline, but she felt it was too complex for the type of show “Grey’s Anatomy” typically presented.

Personally, I found myself deeply fond of Izzie and wishing for her to experience happiness with Denny. A part of me was drawn to this scenario and wanted to bring it to life on screen, so she could find that joy – even if it was merely a fictional dream. However, given the otherworldly element involved, as you mentioned, this storyline wasn’t entirely consistent with ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’

She went on to explain that Shonda had discussed the same topic with her. Shonda had mentioned an old film where the actress became ill and experienced hallucinations. Initially, I wasn’t sure why she was seeing this person, and no one would clarify. So I asked, ‘Is he a real ghost or is it a hallucination? What’s going on?’ But they remained tight-lipped because it was incredibly secretive. However, Shonda eventually disclosed that it wasn’t a ghost or a hallucination, but rather a manifestation of this character’s illness. Upon hearing this, I felt a pang of sympathy.
