Kate Winslet Says Crew Member Told Her to ‘Sit Up Straighter’ to Hide Her ‘Belly Rolls’ on Camera; She Fired Back: ‘Not on Your Life! It’s Deliberate’

As a long-time devotee of cinema, I must say that Kate Winslet continues to inspire and impress me with her unwavering commitment to authenticity and self-expression. Her recent revelation about a crew member’s attempt to hide her “belly rolls” during the filming of “Lee” is yet another testament to her courage and resilience in an industry that often demands conformity.

During an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, Kate Winslet disclosed that while filming her biographical drama “Lee,” a member of the crew suggested she should conceal her ‘stomach bulges’ when on camera for one particular scene where she wore a swimming costume. In this forthcoming production, which premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Winslet portrays the renowned World War II photographer and journalist Lee Miller.

“Lee is depicted sitting on a bench in a bikini, and during breaks, one of the crew members advised her to sit up taller. ‘Apparently, they didn’t want you to see my belly rolls,’ Winslet said, ‘But absolutely not! It was intentional. You should know that.’ “

Later, Winslet was questioned about appearing “imperfect” on-screen, to which she responded: “Quite the contrary. I am proud of it, as it reflects my real life, something I value deeply. Hiding it never crossed my mind.”

“Winslet stated that it’s generally understood not to comment on someone’s wrinkles, she said. As I grow older, I become more confident in my own skin, which helps me disregard other people’s opinions.”

Winslet is shown without clothes in the film “Lee”, and she previously confessed to Vogue that it took great courage to allow her body to appear at its most natural, rather than concealing softer aspects of herself.

She stated, “Indeed, some from our team might suggest, ‘Perhaps you should sit up a bit more.’ To which I would respond, ‘Not because of any visible flesh, but because that’s how it will be!'”

Winslet added that several high-ranking males often condescended towards her while she was seeking financing for “Lee.” Besides playing the lead character, she also produced this movie.

“Winslet expressed her disbelief at certain men who presume they can assist when it’s unwanted. She shared instances where directors suggested she work on their films in exchange for funding for her ‘Lee’ project, implying she was small or insignificant. Similarly, potential male investors would question why they should support this female lead character.”

“The movie titled ‘Lee’ is set to premiere in theaters during September. To get a comprehensive look at Cate Winslet’s latest feature, visit the Harper’s Bazaar UK website entirely.”
