As a seasoned movie critic with a heart for the artists behind the silver screen, I cannot help but admire Kate Winslet‘s unwavering spirit and resilience in the face of adversity. Her journey from a young actress grappling with self-doubt to an Oscar winner who stands tall against body shaming is truly inspiring.
Kate Winslet choked back tears during an interview on “60 Minutes”, as she recalled standing up against the media who criticized her weight following the immense success of “Titanic”. As a past Oscar recipient, she has openly discussed the body shaming she experienced after James Cameron’s 1997 film catapulted her to international stardom.
In her “60 Minutes” interview, a clip from E! was shown where the on-screen host commented that Winslet appeared to have been somewhat squashed into a dress she wore during Titanic’s award season. The host also noted that if Winslet had two larger sizes, she would be fine.
Winslet expressed her dismay, stating, ‘It’s shockingly cruel,’ regarding the relentless harassment she faced about her weight from the media. ‘What kind of individuals are they,’ she wondered, ‘to subject a young actress, still finding her way, to such treatment?’
When questioned about whether she had ever challenged the media for their bullying behavior towards her, Winslet replied: “I did speak directly to them. I gave them a piece of my mind. I told them, ‘May this disturb you.’
Winslet went on, her voice trembling slightly, ‘That was an incredible moment.’ It held significance not just for me, but for everyone who endured such harassment. It was truly awful, a terrible ordeal,” she said.
In a 2022 interview with The Sunday Times, Kate Winslet shared that she faced being offered only “plump actress” roles during her early acting school days. After the release of Titanic, body shaming continued as some viewers allegedly used the movie’s ending to mock her weight by claiming Rose was too heavy for Jack (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) to both survive in the freezing Atlantic waters on the door together.
Apparently, it seemed like I was overweight,” Winslet stated. “I can’t understand why they were so cruel towards me. I wasn’t even close to being overweight.
She expressed, “I’m a young woman, going through changes, trying to understand myself, struggling with insecurity, feeling scared, please don’t add to my struggles.” Further explaining, “What you’re doing is more like bullying, and even borders on being abusive, I believe.
Earlier this year, Winslet shared with EbMaster that she experienced body shaming related to “Titanic” for a significant period of time. You can watch her entire interview on “60 Minutes” by clicking on the video link provided below.
