The independent Indian studio, Platoon One Films, has secured the right to screen “Second Chance,” a highly-acclaimed film directed by Subhadra Mahajan for the first time in major cities across India. The release date is set for June 13th. A trailer of the movie has been officially revealed.
The 2024 debut film in black-and-white, initially screened at the 58th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and later at the 28th Busan International Film Festival, has since been showcased in over 25 international film festivals across the globe, such as AFI Fest, Sao Paulo, and the Kerala International Film Festival.
A New Beginning”
In this heartwarming tale, we meet 25-year-old Nia who seeks solace at her family’s mountain retreat in the Himalayas after enduring a life-altering ordeal. There, she forges healing friendships with a wise 70-year-old local woman and her playful seven-year-old grandson. The movie features the captivating performances of Dheera Johnson as Nia, along with Thakri Devi portraying Bhemi and Kanav Thakur as Sunny.
Mahajan, who has worked on Pan Nalin’s ‘Angry Indian Goddesses,’ stated that the film ‘Second Chance’ was created from a very personal and meaningful part of himself. However, throughout its development and all the way to its premiere at Karlovy Vary, it has been adopted and cherished by people who have made it their own.
The film was created by Shyam Bora, who has previously worked on “Aamis,” and it was skillfully captured by cinematographer Swapnil S. Sonawane, whose past works include “Monica O My Darling” and “Newton.” Pan Nalin holds the role of executive producer alongside Sonawane. Additionally, Naren Chandavarkar, Sidharth Meer, and Bhaskar Hazarika take on the co-producer positions for this production.
Shiladitya Bora, founder of Platoon One Films, expressed: “It’s not often you encounter a film that leaves you utterly disarmed, one that you instantly admire and have an overwhelming urge to share with others. ‘Second Chance’ by Subhadra Mahajan was just such a movie.
The distributor intends to implement a “gradual, prolonged launch approach,” initially focusing on Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, and Kochi, before broadening the reach to other markets, similar to their strategy used for Anamika Haksar’s Sundance-winning film “Ghode Ko Jalebi Khilane Le Ja Riya Hoon,” which had a 56-day run in Indian cinemas.
Produced jointly by Latent Pictures and Metanormal Motion Pictures, ‘Second Chance’ also has Bridge PostWorks and Moonweave Films contributing as co-producers.
