Looking forward to the Mortal Kombat 2 movie trailer release tomorrow, there’s a sneak peek at Karl Urban’s portrayal of Johnny Cage in a mock action film titled “Uncaged Fury.” The trailer showcases Mortal Kombat’s marketing team presenting Johnny as the action hero he is, which stands in stark contrast to Linden Ashby’s characterization from the 1995 movie. In that earlier portrayal, Cage was past his prime and seen as a joke, struggling with B-grade martial arts movies.
The mock trailer features Urban’s character, Johnny, fighting off multiple armed opponents and managing to evade a bazooka explosion. Earlier this week, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon shared a phony poster for Uncased Fury, hinting at the direction they’re aiming for. Imagine Chris Evans as Lucas Lee from Scott Pilgrim or Ben Stiller as Tugg Speedman from Tropic Thunder, and you’ll get a sense of the style.
In the world of Mortal Kombat, Johnny is renowned as a true master of martial arts, which he leveraged to build a successful acting career in Hollywood. Modeled after Jean Claude Van Damme, Cage is known for dishing out punches and kicks in battles while maintaining his tough-guy persona. He accessorizes with sunglasses and tries his best to exude coolness.
Mortal Kombat 2 will hit theaters on October 24, 2025.
