Under the title “Karate Kid: Legends,” the movie finally hit screens nationwide today, and although critics haven’t been overly generous in their assessments, viewers seem to be quite fond of this new installment. With more than 250 verified reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is garnering positive feedback from loyal franchise enthusiasts.
Matt S from Rotten Tomatoes remarked that the film was not favored by critics, but he personally enjoyed it, especially when Jackie and Macchio appeared on screen. Many viewers seemed to share this sentiment, as Patricia S commented that the pairing of Jackie and Ralph was excellent. Additionally, RT user Chris noted that their appearance in the movie was well-received.
Jackie Chan is simply amazing; while Ralph Macchio didn’t contribute much beyond a dose of nostalgia, seeing him was enjoyable, and the fresh face turned out to be quite endearing.
In essence, the character referred to as “that new guy” is actually Ben Wang. He plays Li Fong in the series titled “Karate Kid: Legends“. This young talent moves to New York City, where he encounters Mia Lipani (portrayed by Sadie Stanley), faces off against a school bully, and decides to join a karate tournament to aid his friend and conquer his past. The narrative shares similarities with the 1984 movie’s plot, but some critics label it as “generic”. However, Bobby D from Rotten Tomatoes argues that it effectively blends the original “Karate Kid” with the modern adaptation.
‘Karate Kid: Legends’ Does Have Its Detractors
So far, most fans have been praising the movie “Karate Kid: Legends” but, as with any film, there are some who disagree. Many viewers of the Netflix series “Cobra Kai” believe it outshines the new Sony movie. This isn’t surprising, given that over six seasons, the show has set a remarkably high standard for future Karate Kid stories, making it difficult for any subsequent installment to meet such lofty expectations.
Many found the tale in Legends seemed to be moving too quickly, given its 94-minute runtime. With numerous elements unfolding both within the main narrative and subplots, it’s no surprise that viewers might feel this way. In fact, one individual went as far as criticizing the film’s music selection, stating that the choice of tunes was bizarre!
To be honest, the positive seems to trump the negative, particularly on Rotten Tomatoes, regarding Karate Kid: Legends. It appears that many people, including myself, consider it as heartwarming entertainment suitable for family viewing, similar to what RT user Kristen experienced when she took her 10-year-old along. The joy and satisfaction we derive from such movies is what truly counts, isn’t it? After all, if they leave us with a smile on our faces, that’s all that truly matters.
While we eagerly anticipate what’s to come for the franchise and whether there will be additional films, you can currently catch up with The Karate Kid: Legends, now showing in cinemas across the nation courtesy of Sony Pictures. In the meantime, all six seasons of Cobra Kai are accessible for streaming on Netflix.
