The most recent installment in the Karate Kid franchise, titled “Karate Kid: Legends,” debuted in cinemas a week ago. In this new film, Ben Wang portrays Li Fong, a disciple of martial arts masters Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Mr. Han (Jackie Chan). Daniel LaRusso is the lead actor from the original Karate Kid films and the recent Cobra Kai TV series, while Mr. Han was featured in the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid with Jaden Smith. The Legends movie brings together the events from the original movies and the reboot into a consistent timeline, and soon, you’ll have the opportunity to own all six films along with numerous collectibles, as part of the forthcoming Karate Kid Ultimate 6-Movie Collection. Although no official release date has been disclosed, preorders for the $220 collection are currently available only on Amazon.
1984 marked the beginning of the iconic Karate Kid series, introducing us to the original movie where Daniel LaRusso, a high school student constantly bullied, finds an ally in karate master Mr. Miyagi (played by Pat Morita). Under Miyagi’s tutelage, Daniel learns the philosophies and martial arts style of Miyagi-do, eventually confronting his rival Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). The first film was followed by two more movies starring Macchio. In 1994, we were introduced to a new protege of Mr. Miyagi in The Next Karate Kid, named Julie Pierce, played by Hilary Swank.
After a break of sixteen years from cinemas, which many thought marked its end following the demise of Pat Morita in 2005, the series was revived in 2010 with “The Karate Kid”, starring Jaden Smith as Dre Parker, a kid whose family shifted to China and eventually learned Kung Fu under Master Mr. Han, portrayed by Jackie Chan. The entire six-film collection, including “The Karate Kid: Legends”, is available as part of the “Karate Kid 6-Film Collection”.
In summary, the complete Karate Kid saga doesn’t include the Netflix series Cobra Kai, which shares some minor connections with Legends through Daniel LaRusso as their main narrative link. However, these connections help weave both stories together into a unified universe. You can find all six seasons of Cobra Kai streaming on Netflix.
