‘Kaos’ Canceled After One Season at Netflix

As a seasoned film enthusiast who has traversed the labyrinthine world of mythology-inspired productions, I must admit that “Kaos” left me with a peculiar blend of emotions. On one hand, the star-studded cast and the intriguing premise had me eagerly anticipating each episode. However, upon viewing, I found myself grappling with a narrative that seemed to struggle under its own ambition.

The Greek comedy series titled “Kaos,” which made its debut in late August on Netflix, has unfortunately been axed, as confirmed by EbMaster.

The series debuted on August 29, featuring Jeff Goldblum as a more playful yet insecure depiction of Zeus. In this contemporary adaptation, Zeus has imprisoned Prometheus for meddling with his divine rule over humankind. With the aid of three human characters, Eurydice, Ariadne, and Caeneus, Prometheus seeks to dethrone Zeus, a plot penned by Charlie Covell, who is known for “The End of the F***ing World.

The ensemble featured Janet McTeer as Hera, Aurora Perrineau playing Eurydice, Cliff Curtis taking on the role of Poseidon, David Thewlis portraying Hades, Rakie Ayola as Persephone, Killian Scott in the part of Orpheus, Leila Farzad as Ariadne, Nabhaan Rizwan as Dionysus, Debi Mazar as Medusa, Stephen Dillane as Prometheus, Misia Butler as Caeneus, Mat Fraser as Daedalus, Stanley Townsend as Minos, Billie Piper in the role of Cassandra, Suzy Eddie Izzard as Lachesis, Cathy Tyson as Alecto, and many others.

In a predominantly critical assessment, television critic Aramide Tinubu from EbMaster’s expressed that the series “Kaos” falls short of providing enjoyment due to its storyline becoming overwhelmed by its own grandeur. Multiple plotlines appear independently before colliding chaotically towards the season’s underwhelming conclusion. The deities seldom utilize their powers in a manner that elicits awe or excitement. In truth, the audience is left questioning the relevance of their trivial disputes given the numerous challenges on Earth we are already grappling with.

Originally, on an Instagram post that has since been removed, Perrineau shared with followers that the show “Kaos” had been taken off the air. Here’s what she posted:

Well… this one hurts. I find explaining how I’m feeling to be really difficult, but I’ll try.

Initially, when I tried out for this production, I sensed its uniqueness, primarily because Charlie Covell’s script struck a chord with me more deeply than many others. As I read through the characters, I recognized them as if they were familiar faces, and I found myself appreciating each one, flaws and all.

For perhaps the first time in my existence, I’ve experienced genuine pride welling up within me. I’m undeniably proud of the dedication and diligence everyone poured into this project, as they truly gave their all. However, what has surprised me is that I’ve also developed a sense of pride in myself – something I’ve battled with before.

When I landed the role, it was hard for me to comprehend that someone had actually noticed me. Here I am, a girl who is both a minority and a survivor, and you’re saying that they believe I could be one of the main characters in a series, with my own purpose, autonomy, and even desired as the love interest by not just one captivating person but two! Was I good enough for that? The entire experience after that point shifted my viewpoint.

During our trip, I discovered an incredibly gifted group – and Charlie was just one of them. Then I found out about our directors, Georgi [Banks-Davies] and Runyararo [Mapfumo]. As the adventure unfolded, I was astounded by our exceptional cast. There were so many talented individuals that it’s hard to name them all, but I must highlight the three who have turned into cherished friends, family, and sources of support during our months-long journey through Spain: Misia [Butler], Nabhaan [Rizwan] and Killian [Scott].

Reflecting on the stellar team that made up our HMU department, wardrobe team, our dedicated Sister, Netflix, and the entire production crew – each one a powerhouse in their own right. And here I am, amazed at my good fortune to be part of such a talented group, often questioning how and why I was chosen. The response I’d frequently receive was simple yet profound: ‘Why not you?’

As a film critic, let me share my exhilarating experience: Each actor brought their unique flair to the screen, leaving me spellbound and eager for more. I never anticipated such a captivating ensemble in this project. Together, we crafted an oddball masterpiece that danced between the macabre, the comical, and the heartbreakingly human – a testament to our shared humanity. This emotional journey is one I’ll carry with me always.

“Thanks for letting me be your Riddy. I had the time of my life.”
