The Kansas City Chiefs are broadening their presence on television. Currently, a six-episode documentary series is being created by ESPN, Disney+, and Skydance Sports, in collaboration with Words + Pictures, NFL Films, 2PM Productions, and Foolish Club Studios.

The story unfolds from the perspectives of contemporary athletes, team leaders, and coaches. Filmmakers were granted exceptional behind-the-scenes privileges during the 2024 season, which marked a franchise-best 15 wins in the regular season and their third consecutive trip to the Super Bowl.

As a die-hard cinema fanatic, I can’t wait to delve into the journey of this iconic team! The upcoming series promises to take us on a retrospective voyage spanning their 65-year legacy. We’ll witness the highs and lows they’ve experienced throughout the years, making every moment a thrilling ride. Expect a wealth of vintage photos, captivating videos, and fresh, candid interviews that will provide an intimate glimpse into their world.

There’s no sports team as fascinating in the past ten years than the Kansas City Chiefs. To delve into the inner workings of their current dynasty, alongside their iconic players, and intertwine that narrative with the Chiefs’ rich history and Lamar Hunt’s enduring impact on both the club and the league, is a truly exceptional chance,” said Connor Schell, executive producer and founder of Words + Pictures. “We’re thrilled to collaborate with ESPN, Skydance Sports, 2PM Productions, and everyone within the Chiefs organization on this series.

ESPN’s president of content, Burke Magnus, stated, “ESPN and Disney+ understand that sports enthusiasts seek tales that go beyond strategies and plays, and this series will delve into the history of the Chiefs franchise while displaying the emotional journeys of creating a championship team. This project will highlight Patrick Mahomes’ genius, Andy Reid’s leadership, and the fervor of Chiefs Kingdom, offering a glimpse into the drama, tension, and heart that make this team a worldwide sensation.

Over time, the Chiefs have been growing their presence in television, producing online claymation shorts like “A Kingdom Christmas Story: Hail Merry” and a romantic tale titled “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story,” which was shown on the Hallmark Channel. Interestingly, for the latter production, the NFL collaborated closely with Hallmark.

The documentary series is helmed by Kristen Lappas from Words + Pictures, with Connor Schell, Jason Hehir, Libby Geist, and Aaron Cohen serving as executive producers, and Matt Maxson taking on the role of showrunner. Notably, several members of this team were also involved in producing “The Last Dance.

The new docuseries will debut later this year on ESPN and Disney+.
