‘Kalki 2898 AD’ Leads as Indian Box Office Hits $600 Million in First Half of 2024

As a dedicated follower and ardent supporter of the Indian film industry, I am thrilled to share my perspective on the latest box office report from Ormax Media for the first half of 2024. The industry has reached new heights, with INR50 billion ($600 million) in gross collections – a 3% increase compared to the same period last year!

I’m thrilled to share that the Indian box office has surpassed INR50 billion ($600 million) in gross collections during the first half of 2024, as per a recent report by Ormax Media. This represents a 3% growth when compared to the same period last year. What an exciting time it is for cinema lovers in India!

The report provides Indian local numbers and not worldwide grosses for the films.

In June 20XX, the science fiction blockbuster “Kalki: The Chronicles of 2898 AD” reigned supreme at the box office, earning a impressive $92.3 million. This massive revenue represented around 15% of the monthly total, propelling the month’s earnings to an astounding $144 million. “Fighter,” a Bollywood aviation action movie, came in second place with a local gross of $29 million. The Telugu-language mythological hero film, “Hanu-Man,” rounded out the top three with sales of approximately $28.7 million.

In local box office rankings, the Hindi suspense thriller “Shaitaan” earned $21.3 million, coming in fourth place. Fifth was the Malayalam survival drama “Manjummel Boys,” with a revenue of $20.3 million. The sixth position went to the Telugu action drama “Guntur Kaaram,” which made $17 million. Among the Top 10 films, only the Hollywood production “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” managed to make it, earning $16.2 million and ranking seventh.

As a long-time film enthusiast and someone who has followed the Indian film industry closely for years, I find it fascinating to see the diversity and reach of films from various language industries in India. The recent box office successes of “Munjya,” a Bollywood horror comedy with earnings of $14.4 million, Malayalam-language dramas “The Goat Life” and “Aavesham” with $12.4 million and $12 million respectively, are testament to this.

During this time, I observed significant changes in the language dynamics of the Indian film industry. Malayalam cinema made an impressive advancement, increasing its market share from 5% to a remarkable 15%, which is more than what it earned in the entirety of 2023 within just the first six months of 2024. On the other hand, Hindi-language films from Bollywood faced a slight setback, with their market share decreasing from 37% to 35%. The report suggests that this could be due to the lack of a blockbuster hit like “Pathaan” that was released in 2023.

In the first half of 2024, Telugu movies held a firm position with a 23% share of the film market. On the other hand, the market shares for Tamil films and Hollywood productions decreased by five percentage points each, to 12% and 7% respectively, compared to the previous year. The Punjabi cinema sector saw growth, reaching a 3% market share due to the success of “Jatt & Juliet 3” in June. However, Kannada films faced a significant decline, accounting for only 1% of the film market share during this period.

I’m excited to share that the reports suggest a robust second half of the year, filled with high-profile releases in various languages. Some highly anticipated titles like “Pushpa 2: The Rule,” “Stree 2,” “Singham Again,” “The Greatest of All Time,” and “Devara” are creating quite a buzz. If these films live up to expectations, the box office revenue in 2024 could be on par or even surpass that of the impressive year we had in 2023.
