As a seasoned movie buff with decades of cinema-loving under my belt, I must say that 2024 has been a truly remarkable year for Indian content. The diversity and depth showcased in these rankings are a testament to the richness of our storytelling and the global appeal of our narratives.

In 2024, the science fiction epic “Kalki 2898 AD” and Netflix’s historical series “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” topped IMDb’s lists for the most popular Indian films and web series respectively. These rankings, determined by page views from IMDb’s 250 million monthly visitors, highlight the growing influence of Indian content in various genres and languages.

The film rankings showcase the diverse entertainment scene of India, including seven movies in Hindi, along with “Kalki 2898 AD” in Telugu, “Maharaja” in Tamil, and “Manjummel Boys” in Malayalam. Popular franchises continued to captivate audiences, as “Stree 2: Sarkate Ka Aatank,” “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3,” and “Singham Again” all made it into the top 10 list.

Director Nag Ashwin of the movie ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ attributed its success to the positive global response. He expressed that it was heartening to witness the film touching hearts and finding connections among various age groups worldwide, as they had put their hearts into creating it.

In the world of streaming services, Netflix and Prime Video led the pack in terms of popular series, each boasting three top-ranked titles. Tanya Bami, head of series at Netflix India, showcased their successful trio: “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” a hit series that topped the charts, the legal comedy “Maamla Legal Hai” ranked 6th, and “The Great Indian Kapil Show” making it into the top 10.

Shilangi Mukherji, director at Prime Video, commended their two-pronged approach of introducing fresh series and bolstering existing franchises, as evidenced by their impressive performance. With “Mirzapur”, “Panchayat”, and “Citadel: Honey Bunny” all ranking in the top five, Mukherji expressed a positive outlook for Prime Video’s content offerings in 2025.

Deepika Padukone shone brightly in her roles, appearing in three films – “Fighter,” “Kalki 2898 AD,” and a sequel titled “Singham Again.” Additionally, “The Great Indian Kapil Show” made history as the first non-fiction series to be included in IMDb’s annual top lists.

The film ‘Laapataa Ladies,’ which ranked 10th overall, holds an added importance because it was India’s entry in the International Feature Film category for the 97th Academy Awards.

Yaminie Patodia, who leads IMDb India, stated that these lists highlight the astonishing range of Indian storytelling that enthralled viewers worldwide during this past year.

The lists include all Indian content that was released from January 1 to November 25, 2024, only considering titles that have an IMDb user rating of at least 5 stars as potential contenders.
