However, for actress Kaitlyn Dever who plays Abby, the scene struck an uncomfortably personal chord as she lost her mother just weeks prior to filming a sequence where her character also grapples with parental loss. When discussing the process of filming a significant and contentious scene with Pedro Pascal for The Last of Us Season 2, Bella Devereau was straightforward about her feelings. She admitted that the days leading up to this scene were extremely difficult for her, as her mother had passed away from breast cancer over fourteen years after her initial diagnosis. In February 2024, Bella paid tribute to her mother on Instagram.

As I stood in front of the camera for that pivotal moment on The Last of Us, it had been just two or three weeks since I lost my beloved mother. Her funeral took place mere days before my first day on set. I found myself existing in a haze, a fog, struggling to fully grasp the reality around me.

Craig Mazin, both the showrunner and writer, was highly impressed with Bella Dever’s handling of filming The Last of Us Season 2. Mazin emphasized that it was crucial to give Dever as much time as needed during this process. “Although I am deeply invested in the success of the series,” Mazin stated, “it is just a TV show. I wouldn’t want to interfere with someone’s personal grieving, especially for a production that deals significantly with the theme of grief.”

Previously, Pascal and Neil Druckmann’s co-creator, Neil Druckmann, discussed the surprising demise in Season 2 that was revealed. Some speculated this twist might occur later in Season 3, which is already confirmed. However, Mazin decided to avoid prolonging the suspense for viewers who were aware of the upcoming event.
