Kaitlyn Dever Discusses Abby In TLOU S2: “She’s A Chilly Ice Queen”

THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE LAST OF US SEASON 2

In the opening scene of The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 1, Kaitlyn Dever‘s character, Abby, delivers a chilling speech about pursuing and eliminating Joel (Pedro Pascal). She is not just seeking to eliminate Joel; she desires retribution for Joel taking her father’s life. Moreover, she expresses her intention to inflict a prolonged death upon Joel.

In an exciting conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, I expressed that a particular scene in the episode was downright chilling. I couldn’t help but exclaim, “She’s as cold and captivating as an icy queen!

In that instance, what she yearns for is a solution to her predicament, as Dever expressed. At that very moment, all she can fathom is retribution. She’s shattered, she’s sorrowful, she’s disoriented and she’s striving to put the fragments back together.

In 2020, when The Last of Us: Part II was released, Abby, the character she played, sparked a lot of debate, discussion, and discussion. People are anticipating similar conversations for the upcoming TV show. Dever admitted to Collider that she’s aware of the ongoing discussions about Abby, but she didn’t pay too much attention to it while performing her role.

She mentioned, “I was indeed aware of the discussions regarding Abby, yet to perform my duties effectively, I chose to keep an eye on it without letting it consume my attention entirely. If I had allowed myself to be preoccupied with online speculations about this character, I believe it would have affected my performance. Ultimately, giving a top-notch performance is what truly matters.

As a devoted admirer, I can share that in our conversations during the development of The Last of Us series, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann appeared remarkably unfazed by the response to Abby’s character from the game.

In the conversation, Dever expressed gratitude for their faith in him handling the role, which in turn boosted his own self-confidence as he prepared to take on such responsibilities.

In the same interview, it’s mentioned that Dever declared she hadn’t tried out for Abby. Previously, Dever had been considered for Ellie when The Last of Us was being developed as a film. Unfortunately, this didn’t come to fruition. However, Dever was already recognized by Mazin and Druckmann, leading them to cast her as Abby without requiring an audition.

She remarked about Mazin and Druckmann, “They are exceptionally assured narrators. They know precisely who suits their narrative best, and they trust in that decision completely. This is incredibly valuable when creating something similar, as it encourages flexibility and fosters a sense of security while portraying these characters.

In contrast to its initial season premiere in 2023 which attracted 4.7 million viewers, The Last of Us Season 2 made a powerful entrance by garnering 5.3 million same-day viewers on its debut.

New episodes of The Last of Us air Sunday nights at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET.
