K-Drama Karma: Who Survives the Grim Climb to Justice?

[details of who dies].

In a fresh twist, Karma weaves together narrative elements reminiscent of Pulp Fiction’s non-linear storytelling, while infusing themes of retribution and revenge similar to those seen in Park Chan-wook’s vengeance trilogy. To give it a unique edge, the first episode introduces an element akin to Squid Game.

In simpler terms, the main plot of the six Karma episodes revolves around six distinct characters – The Witness, The Debtor, Glasses, Ju-yeon, Gil-ryong, and Yu-jeong. These seemingly unrelated individuals eventually find themselves connected, and their choices affect one another in surprising and often lethal manners.

The Netflix series is packed with unexpected events, as chance encounters, deceitful actions, and cases of mistaken identity shape its storyline. It eventually leads to a satisfying ending where those who deserve it mostly face their consequences. Be advised: Spoilers lie ahead.

What happens at the end of Karma?

By the finale of Karma, five out of the six characters meet their demise, leaving only Ju-yeon alive. She is arguably the most innocent among them, and justly escapes unharmed as the storyline provides a means for her to overcome her past traumas.

The narrative kicks off with a small act of fire-setting and homicide in a deserted warehouse, creating the initial enigma: who is the charred individual who miraculously endures that incident and winds up in the hospital?

It appears that the individual is actually Park Jae-young, also known as The Debtor, who has a dark past involving teenage rape. Currently, he’s making attempts to have his father killed in order to claim an insurance payout and use it to settle debts with loan sharks.

However, fate takes a grim turn for Jae-yeoung as the fire he had set earlier engulfs him and the man he hired to harm his father, Gil-ryong, both perishing in the blaze.

In a turn of unfortunate events, glasses finds himself embroiled in a romantic situation that culminates in an instance of intoxicated driving. He mistakenly believes he has struck someone with his vehicle, unaware that the person he supposedly hit was already deceased.

Later, the glasses character exhibits abhorrent behavior, ultimately meeting an unfortunate end at the hands of a shovel. This character had earlier murdered gold-digger Yu-jeong by ramming her against a wall with their vehicle, and was later buried next to her.

This version aims to maintain the original meaning while using more natural and less dramatic language for easier reading.

The right fate, for the wrong reason

What remains is the case of Kim Beom-jun, a partner with Yu-jeong in swindling men out of their money, who is also suspected of far more heinous acts such as the shovel murder, arson at the warehouse, and impersonation to deceive and steal.

Under the guise of Park Jae-yeoung, he almost became a victim of nurse Ju-yeon, who mistook him for her attacker. However, after administering Fentanyl to render him unconscious, she was dissuaded from committing the act by her medical colleague.

In an unexpected turn of events, it turns out that the loan sharks mistakenly believe Jae-yeoung is Beom-jun and abduct him to remove his organs. On the operating table, who stands before him with a knife… you guessed it – that very same kind doctor.

As the doc speaks, I can’t help but feel a sense of unease. “This,” he says, pointing at my screen, “is the consequence of your actions.” Instead of the usual anesthetic, he gives my character a harsh lesson, one that ends in Beom-jun’s untimely demise. In gaming terms, I’ve just reaped what I sowed, albeit unintentionally.

At the end of the final episode, a Private Detective has discovered the information Ju-yeon has been seeking about her rapist, revealing that he’s deceased. However, unaware of this revelation, she says: “You don’t need to tell me anything more. There’s no other knowledge I desire.

The last scene shows Ju-yeon beaming with joy upon exiting the hospital and stepping into the snowfall, implying that the entity tormenting her dreams has vanished, allowing her to find peace and overcome her traumatic history.
