The ongoing legal dispute involving Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively over “It Ends With Us” broadened its scope on Thursday, as Baldoni filed a new lawsuit that includes text messages between Lively and him, as well as their co-star and director. In these texts, Lively appears to refer to Taylor Swift as one of her friends, calling her “one of her dragons.
In the lawsuit that was filed against actress Blake Lively and her husband, actor Ryan Reynolds, on Thursday morning, Baldoni claims that the couple stole the movie “It Ends With Us” from him and attempted to harm his public image with untrue accusations of sexual misconduct. Baldoni is requesting $400 million in compensation. It’s worth noting that Swift isn’t listed as a defendant in the lawsuit, nor does her name appear anywhere else in the filing except for a single text message from Baldoni to Lively that refers to “Taylor.
Swift’s representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In a series of texts found on pages 23-25 of the legal document, Baldoni communicates with Lively about changes in the script for a rooftop scene in the movie. According to Baldoni’s lawyers, he felt compelled to text Lively to say that he appreciated her work and didn’t need any pressure from Reynolds or their famous friend to do so.
The lawsuit claims that Lively, together with Reynolds, progressively took control over the production of “It Ends With Us,” including the scene on the rooftop where Lively’s and Baldoni’s characters initially meet. As stated in the court documents, Lively invited Baldoni to her New York penthouse, where both Reynolds and a well-known celebrity friend (seemingly Swift) complimented Lively’s portrayal.
As a film enthusiast, I was working on the rooftop scene today and I must say, your work truly impresses me! It adds so much excitement and intrigue to the project. (I would have felt just as passionate without Ryan and Taylor.) You’ve got talent in spades, and I’m genuinely thrilled and grateful to be collaborating with you on this journey.
In a subsequent piece by Lively, as stated in the lawsuit, the actor acknowledges Reynolds and an unnamed individual as colossal talents in storytelling and writing beyond their main roles. Lively further explains, “They understand I may not always prioritize being visible or used due to concerns about ruffled egos or complicating the process. They don’t care about that. And because of this, they command profound respect and eagerness from everyone. So it seems I need to stop fretting over people liking me.
In the end of her lengthy note, Lively likens herself to Daenerys Targaryen, or Khaleesi, famously portrayed by Emilia Clarke in “Game of Thrones,” and hints at having strong allies. She wrote, “If you ever find time for ‘Game of Thrones,’ you’ll see that I am like Khaleesi, and indeed, I possess my own dragons. They may sometimes cause trouble, but more often than not, they bring about good. Much like hers, my dragons also shield those I defend. So, in essence, we all reap the benefits of these magnificent beasts of mine. And I assure you, that benefit will come your way too.
Baldoni’s complaint asserts that this was Lively’s way of exerting pressure on Baldoni.
According to the statement, the message couldn’t have been more straightforward: Baldoni wasn’t simply engaged with Lively, but also with Lively’s ‘dragons,’ two highly influential and affluent celebrities who weren’t shy about making life tough for him.
On December 31st, actress Rachel Lively filed a lawsuit against Blake Baldoni, producer Jamey Heath, and publicists Melissa Nathan and Jennifer Abel, ten days after submitting an initial grievance to the California Civil Rights Department. She claimed that these individuals had secretly organized a malicious media smear campaign against her, as retaliation for her accusations of sexual harassment on set during film production. In reaction, Baldoni counter-sued The New York Times, who were the first to report on Lively’s grievance, alleging that they had colluded with her team, misrepresenting text messages to harm his reputation. At that time, Baldoni’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, hinted at further legal actions to come.
