Viewers from around the world who enjoy shows similar to “Manifest” are tuning into this five-year-old original mystery thriller, known as “Departure,” a Canadian series that ran for three seasons. Remarkably, “Departure” has climbed its way onto global streaming charts and currently holds the 10th spot on Netflix’s Global Top 10 list as of July 5.
Worldwide, “The Sandman” is leading the pack, followed closely by “Attack on London: Hunting the 7/7 Bombers,” “The Waterfront,” and “Olympo” completing the top five.
This production, titled “Departure“, boasts an impressive lineup including Archie Panjabi, who clinched an Emmy in 2010 for her work on The Good Wife. Additionally, it stars Christopher Plummer, who took home an Oscar in 2012 for his role in Beginners, and has graced the silver screen in films such as The Sound of Music, Knives Out, and many more. The cast additionally includes Mark Rendall, Kris Holden-Reid, and Eric McCormack.
What Happened to the Missing Plane?
As a cinema enthusiast, I find myself captivated by series that delve deep into intriguing mysteries, much like ‘Lost’ or ‘Departure’. This gripping drama unfolds around the enigma of Flight 716, a passenger plane that inexplicably disappeared over the vast Atlantic Ocean. The story follows Kendra Malley, an aviation investigator from Panjab, who is summoned to unravel the puzzle surrounding this missing flight.
In the series, I play Howard Lawson, once Kendra’s mentor and boss, now aiding her in her quest for truth. Unlike other shows that often focus on the personal lives of those involved, ‘Departure’ primarily concentrates on the investigation itself, leaving the passengers’ stories secondary to the mystery of the vanished flight.
The series, similar to the Emmy-winning show ‘Homeland’ that aired from 2011 to 2020, highlights a leading character who is on a truth-seeking mission. In ‘Homeland’, Claire Danes played CIA operations officer Carrie Mathison, who performed an unsanctioned operation in Iraq and was subsequently transferred to the CIA’s counterterrorism center at Langley, Virginia.
As time runs out, Kendra Malley, an investigator with the Transport Safety and Investigations Bureau, is on a mission to locate the vanished aircraft. Simultaneously, she strives to unravel the mystery of its initial disappearance.

The Work from Actor Christopher Plummer
Plummer’s departure from the show marked his final on-screen role, as he passed away in February 2021. For the first two seasons, Plummer was a regular cast member. According to reports, Plummer had completed all of his scenes for the second season before his unfortunate demise. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was said that he filmed all his scenes from his Connecticut residence.
In the second season of Departure, the reason for Plummer’s constant presence at the same location was revealed. Since his character was arrested in Season 1, the creators chose to keep him under house arrest throughout the six-episode second season.
In the finale of the second season, the character portrayed by Plummer’s (Howard) was written out, and it was disclosed that he had been ill, hiding his condition from Kendra all along.
You can watch ‘Departure’ worldwide on Netflix, while in the United States, it is also available on Fawesome and The Roku Channel.
