Jurassic World: Reborn is a fresh take on the story by the author of Jurassic Park, emphasizing elements that made the original captivating, offering a mix of excitement and fear.
The Jurassic Park series poses a challenge, as despite six movies being produced, earning over $5 billion globally, it seems to follow a trend of decreasing quality in each new installment.
Back then, when I first watched Jurassic Park, the concept of dinosaurs coming back to life and the breathtaking visual effects that brought them to screen was like nothing I’d ever seen before. It created a sensation of awe that seems almost impossible to recapture today.
Just as an addict craves the initial rush, crowds eagerly anticipate each new release, seeking to relive some of the original enchantment. Yet, many have fallen short, but Jurassic World: Rebirth approaches that elusive magic closely.
What is Jurassic World Rebirth about?
An engaging Jurassic Park film requires an exceptional narrative foundation, and writer David Koepp has devised an exciting concept for Rebirth. This concept involves a perilous assignment, a group of disposable personnel, a pressing deadline, a time-sensitive element, and a mysterious artifact that could alter the global landscape.
In addition to the films, a villainous character is introduced – Martin Krebs (played by Rupert Friend), a high-ranking pharmaceutical executive whose company is on the verge of discovering a treatment for heart disease.
The predicament lies in securing the necessary DNA samples from three colossal dinosaurs that inhabit our planet. Unfortunately, contemporary climate and diseases have drastically reduced their numbers, leaving them primarily in tropical island regions, which are off-limits to human exploration due to strict regulations.
To ensure success, Krebs requires a highly skilled task force to venture into hazardous regions, identify the vital dinosaurs, and secure essential biological samples discreetly. Thus, he initiates his operation by recruiting a proficient specialist in acquisition.
Introducing dinosaur dinner
Klebs chooses Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson), an expert in acquisition with few ethical doubts regarding her assignments. At first, Zora declines Klebs’ offer, but eventually becomes intrigued by his substantial resources.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d put myself in the shoes of Dr. Henry Loomis: a paleontologist who initially declines an offer but gets tempted when presented with the chance to observe dinosaurs in their natural environment. Once there, it’s my mission to identify these mysterious targets and anticipate their behavior.
A disparate group, including an unusual threesome, embarks on a journey to dinosaur territory. However, before they set off, Zora gathers together a band of hired guns she’s worked with in the past, and at their helm is the dashing Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali).
In the movie, several potential dinosaur meals are introduced swiftly. However, if we’re going to have Koepp orchestrate those iconic Jurassic Park moments, there must be children in danger. True to form, the film provides this through a family enjoying a boat trip, only for them to unwittingly step into the imminent terror that looms ahead.
Aquatic action and emotional spectacle
The film’s initial thrilling action scene signifies their arrival, drawing inspiration from the most iconic monster movie – Jaws.
Initially, a fleeting sight of a fin sets off an intense struggle for life when a dinosaur accidentally hits their boat, plays with them, overturns the boat, and leaves dad, his daughters, and their clueless companion adrift in the vast sea.
In the following scene, Zora is tied to the bow of a vessel, attempting to shoot a dart at a Mosasaurus. The situation rapidly intensifies as Spinosaurs encircle and assault her, reaching an exhilarating peak.
Not only does the watery terror persist, but some of Rebirth’s most striking moments unfold submerged, such as a Tyrannosaurus rex attack – initially omitted from the first Jurassic Park – that proves to be a reward for the 32-year anticipation.
And by the way, did you know about the genetically-altered dinosaurs? That’s right, they’re part of the story too! The movie starts with a chilling announcement that no one wants to hear in a high-risk dinosaur facility: “Emergency, breach of containment!
The story then leads to a massive hybrid creature carrying out a gruesome attack, and later, our protagonists and antagonists find themselves back at that location to engage in combat with genetically modified beasts, among which is the terrifying and ominously named Distortus Rex.
If you’ve watched director Gareth Edwards’ past movies with creatures, you’ll recognize his style of combining action with emotion. A scene in Rebirth, when Loomis touches a dinosaur for the first time in the wild, echoes a breathtaking moment from Jurassic Park and the emotional conclusion of Edwards’ film Monsters. It’s a short but touching sequence.
Is Jurassic World Rebirth good?
In simpler terms, the main problem with Jurassic World’s newest addition is that the characters aren’t particularly memorable. While Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali bring star appeal to Zora and Duncan, attempts to make them more significant by revealing past hardships don’t quite work out, making these characters somewhat easy to forget.
In other parts, Jonathan Bailey plays Loomis decently as an “impressive nerd,” and Rupert Friend puts in a good effort as the antagonist, but their characters seem like less captivating replicas of intriguing characters from the series’ history.
Jurassic 7 is a summer box office hit, but it’s not just about the characters; instead, it thrives on the intense confrontations between humans (both male and female) and terrifying dinosaurs. These encounters are made even more thrilling by the realistic depiction of these colossal creatures and some chilling death scenes.
Jurassic World Rebirth score: 4/5
In a more straightforward manner, “Jurassic World: Dominion doesn’t actually redefine the franchise as its title implies, but it offers an enjoyable journey with a blend of action and exploration, much like its finest forerunners.
