In the opening scene of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6, ‘Train’, we find ourselves resuming the narrative from where it ended in Season 5. June and Serena, seemingly incongruous partners, embark on a journey together. Meanwhile, Gilead prepares for the establishment of New Bethlehem, and an unexpected comeback graces us with the return of an old character.
Looking back at Season 5 of the Hulu series, things appeared grim for Luke and June. As Commander Lawrence moved forward with his project for New Bethlehem, a supposed sanctuary for displaced Gilead residents, June resisted going back to the nation that had taken her daughter away from her.
In Canada, anti-refugee feelings peaked and escalated further when a supporter of Gilead brutally attacked June near her home, leaving her critically injured. Luke tried to prevent this attack but unfortunately ended up killing the assailant in the scuffle. With Canadians already hostile towards them, remaining in place was no longer feasible.
Mark Tuello assisted them in getting on a westbound train, but with crowds of police at the station, Luke decided to surrender his freedom, thus leaving June and Nichole to continue their journey independently. As the train departed, June suddenly noticed that Serena and baby Noah were also aboard – an unexpected twist! Caution: spoilers follow!
June and Serena are unlikely travel companions
In the premiere of Season 6 of The Handmaid’s Tale, we revisit the train ride. June, Nichole, Serena, and Noah share a journey reminiscent of long-time companionship, yet an undercurrent of tension hovers between them.
At the Wheelers, Serena experienced a glimpse of the turmoil that June endured. However, it’s important to remember that Serena had been the one instigating matters for quite some time. As Lawrence once said, Serena seems to lack an understanding of irony.
In response, when Serena continues discussing their shared predicament within the confines of Gilead, June promptly sets her straight.
After June shares about her broken arm, Serena remarks, “It looks like they’re displeased with us two.” However, June quickly counters, “We aren’t identical.
Serena expresses that June should be able to move past everything now, apparently overlooking the fact that Hannah is still trapped in Gilead. Nevertheless, June chooses to make the most of Serena’s assistance, asking her to look after Nichole while she has a necessary rest herself.
Upon awakening, she’s alarmed to find that Nichole is absent – and the number of people on the train has doubled. She locates Serena with Nichole and Noah, which doesn’t please her much.
In a different wording: “Serena exclaims, ‘You truly believe I would secretly take your daughter while you’re sound asleep, as if I were a character from a fairytale antagonist? Goodness gracious, June.'” The use of irony is still present but more subtle.
However, at the moment, June is facing more pressing issues. Despite her efforts to search for food for both herself and Nichole, her injured arm causes her to feel weak, forcing her to pause and take a seat.
In the scene, Serena seeks help from a doctor onboard to examine her injury, while June focuses on locating a phone that the doctor might have. The doctor proposes a trade: he’d allow June to make calls if she agrees to let him inspect her arm.
Nick gets out of prison
In Gilead, it turns out that Nick has managed to escape from prison once more. It appears that The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 may not address the mystery surrounding Nick’s repeated freedom. It remains a puzzle as to how he continues to evade detection, but then again, that’s just TV for you!
In an exciting twist, it seems that High Commander Wharton, Rose’s father and a key figure poised for a larger part in the concluding chapter of the Hulu series, played a significant role in my release.
Nick attempts to appease her, acknowledging Rose’s justified anger towards him. However, Wharton responds, “Rose has always had a tender heart. The two of you have a whole lifetime to navigate that. As for what transpires between a man and his spouse, it remains a private matter between them and their faith.
I’ve got a little inside scoop – I might be able to reach out to Commander Lawrence on your behalf, remember I had a run-in with him back in Season 5 when he hurt June? But here’s the catch: any assistance I can provide will come with some strings attached.
He advises Nick to prioritize his wife and child, steer clear of distractions, and indicates that despite Wharton’s return to Washington D.C., he plans on staying in New Bethlehem for some time.
In translation: “Forget about June, and I’ll be keeping a close eye on you.”
Tuello makes new plans
On the train again, June re-enters the compartment to discover that Serena has created a secure haven for female and child refugees (though they are unaware of her true identity).
June communicates to Serena that she recently talked with Moira, since Luke has been taken into custody for protecting her. She informs Serena, “The person who hit me is no longer alive.” In response, Serena offers words of hope from Gilead, suggesting, “Divine justice will triumph. Luke will reach you and we’ll be reunited as a family once more.
Lastly, June breaks her silence: “Serena… or should I say Hannah? She’s the one, you know. The one who was taken and is still being held captive.
Moira informs her that their train won’t be going to Vancouver because they aren’t allowed there, and they are still figuring out where they will go next. She expresses regret in the situation.
Serena vows to aid in reconciling June with her family despite the fact that June isn’t keen on her assistance. She believes this is a duty she must fulfill “following all that has transpired.
The camera shifts to Tuello’s office, as Moira bursts in, urgently asking for assistance to free Luke from prison. Indeed, the videos from every street camera clearly show that he was just protecting June.
Tuello indicates he’ll reach out for help but Moira understands it’s futile – he believes there’s no solution available. In his words, “It seems unfavorable for Americans in Canada right now.
It seems increasingly possible that the U.S. Government-In-Exile could cease operations, as there are indications of normalizing ties with Gilead, which might involve withdrawing recognition of the United States. This is according to Tuella’s statement.
Moira declares that they can’t allow their adversaries to succeed,” she states. As it appears that the USA is on the brink of collapse, Tuello counters with, “Mayday is putting up a struggle.” Indeed, what remains of the American administration is preparing to unite with the resistance against Gilead – and Moira expresses her desire to take part in the battle.
The mob comes for Serena
On the train ride, the women recount their experiences from Gilead, discussing those they’ve lost and their methods of escape. Not long after, Serena begins stirring up tension among them by attributing their freedom to “God’s blessing.
As they go on discussing their hardships, Serena remarks, “It appears that each one of us has at some point been involved in some form of violence.” The others remain puzzled, but June gives her a skeptical look, as if to question, “Are you serious?
The doctor approaches June for a quick chat, guiding her aside. In a low voice, he queries, “Could you tell me how acquainted you are with your fellow traveler?
June gives nothing away, but the doctor asserts, “I believe she’s not the person you believe she is. If you truly understood her identity, you wouldn’t allow her to be around your daughter.
I believe she is a person accused of war crimes, using fake identity documents. When they apprehend her, it will be verified. I spoke with the security personnel; they are dispatching an officer to take her into custody.
As I relay the news that help is en route, I assure you, “Rest assured, they’ll ensure her child’s safety more than she could hope for.” In this moment of uncertainty, June implores, “All I ask is that you guarantee one thing. They will protect her baby at all costs.
The doctor approaches Serena with Noah in hand, feigning a routine examination. “He appears to be a robust young lad,” he remarks, holding Noah gently. “Thank goodness for that, don’t you agree?
Initially, Serena dismisses the matter, yet the doctor reveals that he’s been assigned to work at a fertility clinic within Gilead. It later transpires that Fred Waterford and Serena had previously consulted with this same doctor.
With a slightly increased volume, the doctor addresses both Mrs. Waterford and Serena Joy, saying, “He’s truly a stunning young lad,” causing the other ladies in the carriage to take notice.
They initially show astonishment, rapidly transforming into rage. One individual exclaims, “Let’s sever her speech,” while another pushes her aggressively.
Although June holds a grudge against Serena from their past, she doesn’t wish to see her suffering. She implores the other refugees, explaining that a police officer is expected to arrive shortly to rescue Serena.
Yet, upon the officer’s arrival, he examines her supposedly genuine documents, yet deems them authentic, although they are not. In reality…
The officer is among numerous individuals who’ve been wronged by Gilead, and he prefers to let Serena face retribution from an enraged crowd rather than a cozy jail cell.
Despite June’s attempts to persuade him, the officer tells Serena, “Your child is truly beautiful, ma’am. I too have a son and a wife. She passed away in the colonies. Our son would be around eleven now. I’m sorry for interrupting, ladies, but you don’t look at all like Serena Joy.
As I step back, a fellow gamer alerts everyone eager to bail (to steer clear of the impending terror) to jump ship right away. The medic leads us out, leaving me squarely facing off against Serena, who’s clinging onto Noah.
They encircle her and begin jostling her forcefully, mimicking a hunter teasing its target. Quick-witted June, who is forced to the edge, swiftly grabs the emergency brake handle, abruptly halting the train with a piercing screech.
She successfully moves Serena and Noah into a different carriage and pushes them out of the train ahead of the rest of the group, preventing them from catching up. By the time the others manage to board, both Serena and her child are absent, leading June to be labeled as a traitor.
June reunites with a long lost character
As a devoted fan, I found myself awakening in Season 6, Episode 1 of The Handmaid’s Tale, greeted by the break of dawn. Side by side with June and Nichole, we stirred from slumber, only to be met by a servant’s voice echoing through the air, revealing that our destination – Alaska, the last remnant of the United States, standing tall alongside Hawaii at the edge of the map.
A representative visits, and June informs him that she and Nicole are recent arrivals. He directs her to the medical station initially, where she stands in queue. Gradually, a doctor approaches from afar.
The events that unfold next are challenging to describe; they’re the kind of scene that requires visual experience. Upon glancing at his list, the doctor lets it fall to the ground in shock. You see, the person on the list was none other than Holly – June’s mother!
Indeed, it seems her speculated demise in the colonies was unfounded. With a cry for June, they cautiously approach, both stunned, and then share a heartfelt hug, disbelief etched on their faces. That’s how the episode concludes.
