As a longtime fan who has traversed the jungles of Jumanji through every twist and turn since the original film graced our screens, I must say that the news of another installment fills me with unbridled excitement! The seven-year gap between The Next Level and Jumanji 3 feels like a blink of an eye in this magical world.
It took 22 years from the initial Jumanji release to its sequel in 2017, titled Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Therefore, a gap of seven years between the third film, Jumanji: The Next Level (released in 2019), and the upcoming fourth movie seems relatively small in comparison. Presently, Sony has announced the release date for the next Jumanji installment, referred to as “Jumanji 3” at this point.
In simple terms, Jumanji 3 (or whatever its final title may be) is set to premiere on December 11, 2026. Interestingly, it’s possible that the number “3” won’t appear in the title, just like how The Next Level didn’t have a “2”. As of now, no other films are scheduled for release that weekend, but Sony has picked a date that’s just a week before the release of Dune Messiah and an unnamed Star Wars movie. Since there hasn’t been a new Star Wars film in the last five years, it’s not surprising if this upcoming one gets rescheduled. If Dune Messiah stays on its planned release date, we might witness a clash between these two popular franchises towards the end of December 2026.
As reported by Deadline, Jake Kasdan is slated to direct once again, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson expected to produce the upcoming sequel alongside Kasdan, Hiram Garcia, and Matt Tolmach. It’s also mentioned that Johnson might reprise his character Dr. Xander Bravestone. Sources suggest that Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan are in talks for a return as well.
Instead of the initial Jumanji revolving around a mystical board game, the sequel, titled “Welcome to the Jungle,” altered the concept by replacing the in-story board game with a console-style video game. In this new setup, Johnson’s Bravestone, Hart’s Franklin “Mouse” Finbar, Black’s Professor Sheldon Oberon, and Gillan’s Ruby Roundhouse were merely avatars representing their human players. This implies that fresh characters could find themselves trapped within the game unless some of the actors from “The Next Level” reappear in future installments.
