Julián Ortega, Actor on Netflix’s ‘Elite, Dies at 41

As a fan who has followed Julian Ortega‘s career with admiration, his untimely death leaves me utterly saddened and shocked. His talent, charisma, and dedication to his craft were evident in every role he played, from his memorable performance as the manager of “La Cabana” in “Elite” to his heartwarming portrayal in “The Countryside.”

Julian Ortega, star of the popular Spanish Netflix series “Elite,” passed away on August 25 following a cardiac arrest at Zahora Beach in Barbate, Spain, as reported by local media. He was 41 years old.

Spain’s Union de Actores y Actrices posted an obituary for Ortega on Monday.

Instead of initially assuming he drowned, it was later clarified that the Spanish actor suffered a heart attack on the beach. Despite paramedics’ efforts to resuscitate him for multiple minutes, Ortega was sadly confirmed deceased at the location.

In the popular Spanish television series “Elite,” Andres Ortega portrayed the role of the restaurant manager at “La Cabana” across numerous episodes during the show’s inaugural season. This series continued for eight seasons from 2018 to 2024, with its final episode being aired on July 26.

Two days following Julian Ortega’s passing, his ‘The Countryside’ co-star Paco Collado expressed his condolences on Twitter, saying (translated), “It was a great joy [to work with Julian Ortega] playing your father in [‘The Countryside’]. You left us with compassion, generosity, and professionalism. Many hugs, friend, and also to your family, it’s truly unfortunate that you departed in the prime of your life. Rest In Peace, Julian.” (paraphrased)

As a cinephile, I’d say “Elite” is all about me and my working-class peers who dare to join an exclusive private school, challenging the established high society. The talented cast includes Omar Ayuso, Itzan Escamilla, Arón Piper, Miguel Bernardeau, Valentina Zenere, André Lamoglia, and Claudia Salas – a group of characters that bring this riveting tale to life.

The show garnered nominations for multiple Fotogramas de Plata Awards, awards given out annually by Spanish film magazine Fotogramas since 1951. In 2019, “Elite” claimed the title of “best series” at the MTV MIAW Awards, an event similar to the American MTV Music Video Awards, held yearly by MTV Latin America.

Ortega’s additional works also feature prominently, such as “Four Stars,” “The Untamed,” “We Apologize for the Inconvenience,” and “My Love, Gone.”
