Judy Garland’s Daughter Lorna Luft Praises ‘Wicked’ as ‘Astounding,’ Thanks Director Jon M. Chu for a ‘Brilliant’ Addition to ‘The Wizard of Oz’ Family

As a film enthusiast with a unique connection to the magical world of Oz, I can wholeheartedly say that “Wicked” is not just a spectacular movie, it’s a heartfelt tribute to a timeless tale. Having grown up with the legacy of my mother, Judy Garland, who brought Dorothy Gale to life, and being part of the same family tree as Liza Minnelli, I feel an intimate bond with this story.

Lorna Luft, Judy Garland’s daughter, has added her voice to the throng of cinema enthusiasts praising the upcoming release of “Wicked”. Given that Garland is a cinematic legend, famously portraying Dorothy Gale in the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz”, it’s no surprise. Notably, “Wicked” is a musical prelude to this story, with certain elements from “The Wizard of Oz” being incorporated into its second act. It’s worth noting that Luft is the daughter of Garland and Sidney Luft, which also makes her Liza Minnelli’s half-sister.

This film left me speechless! It’s awe-inspiring, masterful, emotional, and truthful,” Luft shared on Instagram. “It’s stunning to behold… from the sets, costumes, makeup, acting, choreography, and the overall cinematic experience, it surpassed all my expectations. I told the talented director Jon M. Chu that he not only picked up the torch but also the broom and wand, and carried them forward; and thanked him for expanding our family with this incredible work.

Luft stated that Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are simply “remarkable” in their portrayals of Elphaba and Glinda, two witches whose paths cross with Dorothy, played by Garland, further along in the narrative.

Luft stated that the actors put them through a series of intense emotional ups and downs, just like a rollercoaster ride. Vocally, they were nothing short of extraordinary and left him speechless! Their acting was genuine, nuanced, amusing, and spot-on perfect.

Luft observed that “Wicked” was crafted with an abundance of affection and reverence towards the classic film “The Wizard of Oz.” He further noted, “Don’t miss out on this enchanting trip through the land of witches! Prepare yourself for a delightful adventure!

Wicked” is a movie based on the long-running Broadway musical of the same name, premiered in 2003. It revolves around the budding friendship between Glinda, the popular one, and Elphaba, an outsider. Notable actors like Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Bowen Yang, and Jeff Goldblum are part of its supporting cast.
