Judge Dismisses Romeo and Juliet Underage Nudity Lawsuit

As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen it all – the good, the bad, and the controversial. The case of Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting vs. Paramount Pictures, regarding their experiences on the set of Romeo and Juliet (1968), is a tale that resonates deeply with me.

On Monday, Judge Holly J. Fujie ruled to dismiss a lawsuit from actors Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting, famous for their roles in the 1968 film “Romeo and Juliet,” as reported by Variety. In the initial lawsuit filed in 2022 against Paramount Pictures, they alleged that director Franco Zeffirelli coerced them into a nude scene while they were only 16 and 17 years old during filming. They based their lawsuit on the California Child Victims Act, asserting that Zeffirelli filmed them without their consent, despite promises of a closed set, and later released naked photographs from the shooting day. The case was dismissed due to expired statute of limitations; however, they filed another lawsuit this year, claiming that the 2023 re-release by the Criterion Collection provided fresh grounds for their case under “revenge pornography.

Nevertheless, Judge Fujie held a different viewpoint. “Examining the 2023 version alongside previous releases, there appears to be no substantial visual enhancement noticeable to an untrained observer, especially in the Bedroom Scene,” she stated in her verdict. Lawyer William Romaine, who represents Hussey and Whiting, suggested that they should consider appealing this decision.
