As a movie buff with a keen eye for historical and political relevance, I must say that Jude Law‘s new crime thriller, “The Order,” seems to be a timely and powerful piece of cinematic artistry. The film’s focus on the investigation of a Neo-Nazi terrorist group in the 1980s resonates deeply with today’s political climate, serving as a stark reminder that far-right ideologies unfortunately still persist.
Jude Law stated that it was essential to produce his latest crime thriller, titled “The Order,” which revolves around an FBI probe into a Neo-Nazi terrorist organization in the 1980s, right now.
As a passionate cinephile, I recently found myself at a Venice Film Festival press conference where Law articulated the profound significance of this particular film in today’s context. With far-right ideologies making a resurgence, the movie’s message resonates more deeply than ever before.
“Unfortunately, its significance is clear on its own. It seemed urgent and necessary to create it at this moment,” he explained. “It’s intriguing to discover a work that resonates with the current times.”
The movie, inspired by real-life events, unfolds in 1983 Idaho. It focuses on a solitary FBI agent (Law) who investigates a string of escalating bank robberies and car thefts. As the investigation progresses, he discerns that these crimes are orchestrated by a ruthless band of domestic Neo-Nazi extremists led by Robert Jay Mathews (Nicholas Hoult). These extremists are planning to wage a war against the U.S. government. The film is based on the 1989 book “The Silent Brotherhood” by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt, and also features Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett, Alison Oliver, and Odessa Young in its cast.
Director Justin Kurzel found the movie’s connections to our contemporary world particularly intriguing, making it a captivating project to work on.
“He stated that it’s remarkable when you come across a historical piece of writing or event whose insights resonate with modern-day politics. Such findings are scarce, but when they do occur, they have much to contribute to current discussions. That’s why we felt there was a wealth of information in this particular instance.”
In order to generate an intense dynamic between Law’s character and Hounslow’s characters, the two actors were deliberately separated until the moment they filmed their very first scene together for the very first time.
For the initial four to five weeks of shooting, Hoult shared that there wasn’t a single word exchanged between us. The team appreciated the concept of maintaining us as separate entities. It wasn’t until our first scene together that we communicated for the very first time.
The law was assigned to follow Hoult for a full day, similar to how an FBI agent might do so. However, Hoult wasn’t informed of this until he arrived in Venice.
“I just found out on the boat here!” he exclaimed.
“In ‘The Order’, a young cop played by Sheridan teams up with Agent Law from the FBI to pursue a supremacist organization. Interestingly, the actor has personal insights on the movie’s topics due to experiences from his youth.”
“Sheridan commented on a compelling work that delves into how individuals from tight-knit communities might be influenced by radical beliefs. Having been raised in a town with only 1,200 residents myself, I’ve witnessed instances where tensions could escalate, particularly within certain subcultures. In the U.S., there’s a particular ideology that has roots deep within small communities and limited external exposure, which was an aspect that intrigued me about this project.”
In December, “The Order” is scheduled for release in the United States, whereas Amazon Prime Video plans to distribute this feature across various international regions.
