As a dedicated fan of both Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when hearing Josh Sawyer’s latest comments about his future projects. With his extensive experience working on PoE installments, it’s hard not to get excited about the possibility of another adventure in the Eora universe. However, as much as I would love to see Pillars of Eternity 3, I must admit that I’m intrigued by Sawyer’s focus on original IP and his passion for experimenting with new brands, like we saw with Pentiment.
The Director of Fallout: New Vegas expresses a greater affinity towards fresh projects rather than revisiting Pillars of Eternity. In an exclusive chat with RPG Site, Josh Sawyer, who has contributed to both iterations of Pillars of Eternity, shares his upcoming plans and encouragement for the team behind Avowed.
As a dedicated PoE (Path of Exile) gamer, I can tell you that it’s no secret that the developer has been hinting at the potential for a third installment of this epic series, even going as far as suggesting a budget akin to Baldur’s Gate 3 might be required to make it happen. Last year, there was a subtle indication that he would need such substantial resources to persuade someone to shoulder such a task. However, more recently in August, Sawyer himself admitted that emulating the success of Larian Studios might not be feasible for him.
In a recent conversation with RPG Site, Sawyer expressed some uncertainty about whether he would ever consider creating Pillars of Eternity 3. Instead, he views Avowed as a continuation within the Eora universe, and at this point, he hasn’t given thought to directing anything further. If he were to work on something new, it would likely be in the realm of an entirely fresh brand; however, there are no definite plans for what the future may hold yet.
Recently, I wasn’t able to generate fresh game concepts or even contribute much to ongoing projects. However, the situation has changed now, and I find myself actively involved in the development of Avowed. Although my role is still advisory, I have penned down some content for the game and provided assistance with system design and other related tasks. Essentially, I’ve been lending a hand wherever they needed it most. Currently, I am doing more hands-on work on Avowed and brainstorming ideas for future projects.

I lean towards preferring creative work on unique intellectual properties (IP) rather than established ones. However, time will tell where my path leads.
For part of this cause, Sawyer, who admitted as much himself, found himself exhausted following the development of PoE 2: Deadfire, and is no longer spearheading the production of Avowed; instead, he’s lending his support to the team. It’s also common knowledge that this creative team enjoys tinkering with new ideas. Launched in 2022, Pentiment was a project close to Sawyer’s heart, and it proved successful – resonating with players and receiving positive reviews.
Currently, I’ve got a plate full with assisting the creators of the upcoming RPG, Avowed, and, once I manage to carve out some spare time, I’ll be diving back into Pikmin 4. Speaking of which, Avowed, the highly-anticipated RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, is set for release on February 13, 2025, available on both PC and XSX/S platforms.
