Prior to Andrew Garfield landing the part in The Amazing Spider-Man, it was Josh Hutcherson from The Hunger Games who had also been seriously considered for the role. His audition demonstrates that he would have been excellent in the role.
Generally speaking, there’s widespread agreement on Garfield as Spider-Man: many believe he’s the best we’ve seen so far, yet some found him too suave for Peter Parker’s character. Regrettably, most of his films didn’t live up to expectations, but they did include some impressive web-swinging scenes and a memorable portrayal of Gwen Stacy’s iconic death.
In 2012, his debut movie was launched. This release occurred two years following Sony’s announcement that Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 had been scrapped. The fresh start led to a new ensemble of actors, featuring Emma Stone as Gwen, Rhys Ifans portraying Dr Connors/the Lizard, Martin Sheen in the role of Uncle Ben, and Sally Field playing Aunt May.
In July 2010, it was officially decided that Garfield would be the new Spiderman, following numerous audition rounds. To this day, many still consider his performance as one of the finest.

On a three-minute video, Hutcherson’s Peter Parker gets pushed down by a gang of high school bullies. One of them remarks, “It seems like your crush is fond of Parker,” and they surround him to attack.
Indeed, it’s not smooth sailing as Hutcherson relies on his spidery instincts and agility to fend them off. The video’s choreography is top-notch, blending tunes from Raimi’s Spider-Man series and The Matrix. To add, Hutcherson portrays the character remarkably well.
The video on YouTube has over a million views, with one viewer saying, “I really enjoy this. Josh manages to be both dorky and cool in a way that some adaptations struggle to achieve, and he’s also an excellent actor.
Given that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently focusing on the Multiverse, it might not be too challenging to include Josh in a minor role, just so he can fulfill his impressive audition performance.
What a pity! He would have excelled in that role and it would have boosted his career significantly if he had been chosen as Spider-Man. Although, unfortunately, he is too old now, but he surely would have made an outstanding Spider-Man.
During an interview with Inverse in 2024, the actor shared that he never discovered why Garfield was chosen over him for a certain role. He also mentioned, “About three weeks after my audition, I landed The Hunger Games instead, which turned out to be quite fortuitous.
As a longtime Spider-Man enthusiast who grew up on the classic cartoons, I’d certainly entertain the idea of making a multiversal cameo, like maybe in Secret Wars. It’s a potential yes from me, and if it happens, you can bet I’ll be swinging into action!
