According to The New York Times, he was 65 years old. He had been fighting throat cancer for several years.

You were an insightful, stimulating, courageous, and exceptionally innovative spark. There aren’t many like you left. I eagerly anticipate our reunion in the skies someday. Their post read: “We’re heartbroken to learn that our friend and colleague, Val Kilmer, has passed away. With his unforgettable characters as Madmartigan, Iceman, Doc Holliday, and Jim Morrison, Val became a true legend. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.

In the ’80s and ’90s, Kilmer was a prominent actor, taking on leading roles in films like “Top Gun,” “Real Genius,” “Tombstone,” “Heat,” and “The Saint.” He made a short appearance in 2021’s “Top Gun: Maverick” despite his cancer preventing him from speaking.
2021 saw the debut of a documentary about his life titled “Val.” His son lent his voice for the film, and it drew from hundreds of hours of footage he had accumulated over the years. This provided a unique insight into the sets he worked on, portraying him as an introspective individual with a creative spirit, reflective of an artist’s soul.
