As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that stories like Josh Brolin’s run-in with Denzel Washington on the set of “American Gangster” make for some fascinating behind-the-scenes tales. It’s always intriguing to see how even the most esteemed actors can get heated during filming, especially when portraying characters as intense as those in this crime drama.

On the “In Depth With Graham Bensinger” podcast, Josh Brolin spoke about his new memoir, “From Under the Truck,” and recalled an intense confrontation on the set of Ridley Scott’s “American Gangster” with co-star Denzel Washington. As a detective in the 2007 crime film, Brolin found himself butting heads with Washington, who portrayed the infamous drug lord Frank Lucas.

Indeed, there was a near altercation, Brolin shared, mentioning that much of his time on the “American Gangster” set was spent acting alongside Russell Crowe. The few occasions when he shared the spotlight with Washington were tense due to the fact that Washington portrayed a merciless mob boss, an Oscar-winning performance.

James Brolin mentioned that Denzel Washington arrived a bit late for their setup, causing some inconvenience. Later on, Denzel shared the script with him. However, instead of modifying his lines, Denzel rearranged the script’s structure slightly. He explained, ‘I plan to place this part here and move that part there.’ Yet, he avoided looking directly at James during this conversation.

He went on to explain that he was struggling to recall the script’s structure and then we practiced. There weren’t many lines, primarily his. He needed to portray confidence, given it was Denzel Washington, who can be quite intimidating. It wasn’t a walk in the park – just another actor being tested for the role.

Brolin gently touched Washington’s shoulder while asking him about his lines.

He swatted my hand away and sternly warned, ‘Keep your hands off me, or so help me!’ I recall thinking, ‘Wow, I’m about to have a brawl with Denzel Washington. This is unbelievable.’ In that instant, we were no longer actors; at least in my perspective, he was simply living up to his role. He embodied Frank Lucas completely. But I didn’t realize this then. After that tense moment passed, I asked, ‘Are you alright?’ To which he replied, ‘Yes, and you?’ I responded, ‘Yes. Can I have my line now?’ It seemed as if he had expressed everything he needed to.

Brolin made clear that the two performers are currently on good terms, and what appeared as a tense situation on set was merely a brief outburst. We have contacted Washington’s team for further clarification.

2007 saw the release of “American Gangster” in cinemas, which earned co-star Ruby Dee an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. This was the first time director Scott and Washington worked together, and Washington’s positive experience on set led him to agree to work with Scott again, given that he was directing “Gladiator II”.
