Last time Jonathan Majors participated in a series of interviews at a press event was around late February 2023. He was then rapidly ascending the Hollywood ladder, with his highly anticipated Marvel movie debut as Kang the Conqueror in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” set to hit theaters shortly before Michael B. Jordan’s popular boxing film “Creed III.
Approximately a month after reaching the peak of his success, Majors found himself arrested due to a heated argument with his girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. In a widely publicized court case, he was found guilty on two counts of misdemeanor harassment and assault. This verdict marked the downfall of his acting career. Marvel Studios terminated him, abandoning plans for his character’s extended movie series, and numerous other film projects (including a Dennis Rodman biopic and a collaboration with Spike Lee) dissolved. “Magazine Dreams,” a film that had garnered attention for Majors due to its raw portrayal of an unstable bodybuilder, lost its distributor, Searchlight Pictures. It appeared that the entertainment industry had turned its back on Majors.
Two years have passed since “Magazine Dreams” was first conceived, but now, it’s set to hit the big screen! This is made possible by Briarcliff Entertainment, an independent distributor known for handling projects like “The Apprentice,” who acquired the project last year. You can catch it in theaters starting this Friday.
Previously, Majors has asserted he’s never been physically abusive towards women; however, a recording published by Rolling Stone yesterday contradicts this claim. In the leaked conversation, Majors acknowledges being “aggressive” with Jabbari in a past incident, where she alleges he choked her and shoved her against a car. (It’s worth noting that Majors and Jabbari resolved a lawsuit involving assault and defamation charges against the actor in November 2024). The implications of this audio recording on Majors’ ongoing career resurgence remain uncertain.
Currently facing me is Majors, who appears noticeably different from his days of peak film fame. He’s noticeably smaller physically, having lost weight for roles like “Creed III” and “Magazine Dreams.” Additionally, a new tattoo adorns him – the word “Rebirth,” elegantly written in cursive, is etched on his neck. Last year, he visited a tattoo parlor in New York City’s Alphabet City, where he resides with his wife, actress Meagan Good.
Majors admits he acquired it impulsively,” he states, yet clarifies that his decision was deliberate. Following the trial, he found himself pondering about the future.
Or:
“Majors confesses he obtained it spontaneously,” he acknowledges, however, he points out that his action was well thought-out. Post the trial, he began contemplating what would follow next.
Majors paused to think, ‘Alright, what’s the plan here? Are you going to persist? And most importantly, how are you going to continue?’ he remembers. “I replied, ‘You’ll learn, you’ll grow.’ I then entered the tattoo parlor and declared, ‘Rebirth,’ symbolizing the transformation that was about to take place.
What kind of rebirth is he talking about? As an actor in Hollywood? As a man?
He says, in essence, that when we’re reborn, we start anew, without any baggage. We’re blank slates, filled with possibilities rather than experiences. Nothing has hurt us or shaped us yet. Learning is all we possess, and that’s where he started his journey.
In this discussion, Majors provides some insights into the current stage of his career following the trial, touches upon being let go by Marvel, and ponders if viewers will continue to purchase tickets for his films.
After your trial and conviction, some people don’t want to see you in movies again. What’s your response to them?
Everyone has the freedom to make their own decisions when it comes to watching movies. If you’re not interested in them, there’s no need to watch them. It’s all about showing respect and love for individual preferences.
This movie came out at Sundance two years ago. How has your relationship to it and to your character Killian changed?
Initially, I thought, “This is the toughest character I’ll likely embody.” However, that role was put aside by Searchlight Pictures. I had to keep it stored in both mind and heart as a memory. Although it wasn’t active anymore, it remained with me, physically and emotionally, even lingering on my person.
When Briarcliff resurfaced the topic, it sparked a feeling within me that whispered, “There might be a chance.” I had to scrutinize this sensation, wondering, “What exactly am I hoping for? Is it wishing to return to the big screen?” It was as if a warm blanket of hope enveloped me. If we could release this movie, it offered me a tangible link, a lifeline, to the community that I hold dear – the film industry – beyond my family and faith.
After watching it more closely, I’ve reconsidered the essence of the movie “Magazine Dreams”. To me, it appears to be a heartfelt tribute to humanity, encompassing various aspects of us. It may not always be perfect, but it consistently highlights our innate goodness and our persistent quest as humans. Just like how Killian stumbles and errs, much like I’ve experienced in my own life, this story is a reflection of our shared human experiences.
It’s a tough watch both because of the ways Killian grapples with his loneliness and the ways that people treat him, but also because of the violence and the ways that he struggles with impulse control.
Where do you see violence in the film?
There are a few instances of violence that are perpetrated against Killian — one where he’s pulled out of the car and beaten and another where he’s sexually assaulted. And there’s the violence he perpetrates — at one point, he breaks the windows of the paint shop — where he is out of control. Given everything that’s happened with your trial, do you think people will have a hard time watching scenes like that and separating the art from the artist?
As a movie lover, I must admit that without personally discussing this film with you or having a broader audience’s feedback, my understanding of the general opinion towards it remains speculative at best. However, based on my own observations and discussions with fellow cinephiles, I have an inkling about what the general consensus might be.
Indeed, it’s challenging to reach a universal agreement on matters of art or human nature due to their inherent subjectivity. Finding a balanced approach might prove difficult.
From my perspective, one might find that particular scene challenging to witness. However, I suppose for someone with a specific grasp of the character or even myself, it could be less so. Yet, many individuals are unacquainted with me, while others certainly are. Art’s beauty lies in its interpretation, and each viewer holds the power to perceive and feel about it as they choose.
In your past roles, we’ve talked a lot about masculinity and how the different projects address that topic. What do you feel “Magazine Dreams” has to say about it?
It’s important to note that there’s nothing inherently problematic about being masculine. However, when it transforms into something harmful or toxic, it requires attention and scrutiny. “Magazine Dreams” offer a glimpse into this transformation process. In my opinion, one significant factor contributing to this change is loneliness. When left unchecked, loneliness can foster decay within oneself and eventually consume other aspects of life. I can empathize with feelings of loneliness, but it’s essential to address them before they lead to negative consequences.
A key aspect of toxic masculinity lies in the path we often take towards it – one that society, including myself, has unknowingly tread. This path is masked by labels such as “lone wolf,” “Alpha male,” and other seemingly positive traits. However, these terms can actually lead us astray.
Those are positive?
I’ve been trying to maintain a positive demeanor, but as I reach the final stepping stone, I find myself transformed into someone toxic. Alone in my struggle, it’s challenging to retrace my steps without external assistance.
As a cinephile, immersed in the world of Killian’s journey, I find myself resonating deeply. I connect through the lens of family, transparency, and self-awareness. I’m not just living in the moment; I’m learning, growing, and embracing my past, standing side by side with those who guide me on this path.
In the end, he discovers a link between himself and another. Although I’m far from finished in my life right now, I grasp the importance [of these connections]. I rekindled my bond with myself – not just the professional side or the parental side, but the genuine, shared part. This is where discussions about masculinity are currently focused. And a healthy form of masculinity fosters compassion and self-awareness, which can prevent disagreements or hasty actions.
Much of your message about softer masculinity has seemed targeted at Black women. As you’ve come through the trial, how have Black women received you?
We’re gonna talk straight, right? How do you receive me, as a Black woman?
I have questions. It’s hard to reconcile what I’ve heard and seen — even today, when I listened to the Rolling Stone audio — with how you behaved with me in past interactions. I’m unsure what to believe about the type of person you are.
Well, I reckon the rest of the sisters are in the same boat.
Have you heard that from people?
Although no one has explicitly told me this, I sense that many people appreciate and support me. My partner, Meagan Good, is a prime example – she’s incredibly supportive, present, loving, and caring. As I encounter other “queens” (strong women) in my daily life, they often express their admiration by saying, “Hey, we love you brother. Keep your head up.” I’ve shared prayers with numerous Black women on the streets of New York City, and their love and support have been a constant source of strength for me – emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. It is because of them that I’ve been able to persevere. (Majors and Good got married in a private ceremony following this interview.)
You have talked about the people who kept you afloat — not only Meagan, but also Whoopi Goldberg, Michael B. Jordan, Will Smith, Tyler Perry. How have they helped you? Have they helped you get jobs or meetings?
My agent sorts that part out. He’s really good at that stuff.
Regarding the individuals you’ve mentioned, it’s important to clarify that I haven’t had the opportunity to collaborate with Tyler Perry or Will. I’m cautious about sharing this information because I value their privacy. The support they provided me was facilitated through a connection, and it was simply comforting to have someone to converse with during that time. I hope you understand my sentiment.
It’s during challenging times like these when support truly matters. When someone stumbles or faces scandal, people often tend to distance themselves, which is exactly what they don’t need at that moment. Unfortunately, in our world and profession, it’s all too common to turn away. I get it, but let’s remember that this isn’t always beneficial for the person who’s going through a tough time. Instead, we should strive to approach them with understanding and empathy.
It seems quite tricky. At the moment, I wouldn’t feel right… if you were taking care of someone. If you accidentally call the wrong person by their name, they could get into trouble. I believe this isn’t fair.

Director Martin Villeneuve hired you for his new project “Merciless.” Where are you at with it?
We’re currently in the planning stages of our project, which is a captivating story centered on a former CIA agent. His past exploits unwittingly invite a supernatural entity into his wife’s life. Now, he must fight to protect her and their lives. Martin has assembled an exceptional crew for this endeavor. I’m working diligently with those who share my passion for the project.
I want to ask you about Marvel. Did the company tell you directly that you had been dropped or did you hear that through your team? When is the last time you spoke to Kevin Feige?
I wrote a letter to him. Not recently, [but] not too far in the past.
To set the record straight, let me clarify that things aren’t ideal, as you might agree. It’s a sudden, unexpected turn – one minute you have a verdict, the next you’re left in the lurch. However, Marvel isn’t mismanaging anything by word-of-mouth announcements. I secured the job through such channels rather than receiving a direct call from Kevin. My agent was the one who informed me, and later, another representative of mine passed on the news. Consequently, I reached out to Kevin directly.
Why did you want to write him a letter?
I truly admire him. I’m deeply fond of him. I had a fantastic experience at Marvel, and I continue to have affection for Kang. I’m keeping an eye on them. I observe their progress and I’m rooting for their success. If they require my help, they know how to reach me.
Do you think that there is a world in which they do make that call?
I don’t have the power to change it, but I see and understand that it’s a publicly-traded corporation. You’re trying to do something there, but it’s complicated because of the public nature of this company – controversies can affect its reputation. This is just how things work in such situations. I don’t blame them for it. I want to emphasize that I’m not upset with anyone about this and have no hard feelings at all.
Michael B. Jordan says he wants to make “Creed IV” with you. Will it happen?
Essentially, we’re both prepared and skilled, but what’s needed is a change in personnel. For such an event to occur, it seems there must be individuals who’d agree, “Sure, okay, sounds good.
What do you think people need to see in order to say, “Oh, we want Jonathan Majors for a romantic lead again.” Because you previously talked about wanting to do romcoms. But given the circumstances, that you were convicted in a domestic dispute, do you think people would be receptive? Can you change that perception?
I’ll carry on being true to myself, with the experiences and relationships I’ve cultivated through my journey so far. Let’s move forward together.
A long time ago, it seemed like you had to prove something and fit certain stereotypes to be considered a “serious actor.” If you went to Yale, you were expected to act accordingly, and if you’re a Christian, the same expectation was there. I get it and agree with those expectations, but ultimately, I have to be true to myself. I trust that the growth I’ve experienced will resonate, if it does.
Who have you heard from, outside of your circle, that has seen the film? Have you gotten a chance to hear from early audiences? What are they saying?
The individuals I’ve interacted with have expressed a strong affection for the movie. They are particularly fond of Killian’s acting, finding themselves emotionally invested in the character, and appreciating the artistic aspects of it.
After “Magazine Dreams” is released, what are your plans?
I’m eager to create art. I have a desire to narrate tales and influence viewpoints, aiming to aid others through my artistic expressions. My talent lies primarily in acting, yet my heart yearns for more; I wish to broadcast this passion of mine, but it must be done naturally and with genuine enthusiasm.
As a passionate cinephile, I adore our craft – the artistry, the business, and everything in between. Yet, it’s essential to remember that it’s merely a part of my life, not my entire existence. I am committed to personal growth, striving to become a better version of myself. This evolution as an actor intertwines with my journey as a human being; unfortunately, my acting prowess has outpaced my personal development. I need to close that gap. I ponder what my work will be like when they’re equal – when both aspects of me are balanced. That’s the essence of my current focus: achieving equilibrium in my life and career.
