Jonathan Majors Film ‘Magazine Dreams’ Sets 2025 Release Date After Searchlight Exited Over Actor’s Domestic Assault Conviction

As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of film-viewing under my belt, I must confess that the news about “Magazine Dreams” and its acquisition by Briarcliff Entertainment has piqued my interest. The cast, crew, and storyline all point towards a compelling cinematic experience. However, the circumstances surrounding its journey to the big screen have certainly added an unusual twist.

“Magazine Dreams,” a gripping sports drama featuring Jonathan Majors, has been purchased by Briarcliff Entertainment for a 2025 theatrical release. Originally secured by Searchlight Pictures at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, the partnership ended earlier this year following Majors’ conviction in a domestic assault and harassment case involving his ex-girlfriend. The movie “Magazine Dreams,” written and directed by Elijah Bynum, will make its theater premiere sometime in the first three months of next year (exact date yet to be announced). The film tells the story of Killian Maddox, an ambitious bodybuilder who resorts to steroid abuse in his pursuit of sports stardom. Following its debut at the Park City Film Festival, a competitive bidding war ensued among Neon, Sony Pictures Classics, and HBO, with Searchlight eventually securing the domestic rights. However, after Searchlight let go of “Magazine Dreams,” the filmmakers were then able to explore distribution deals with other companies.

Previously, Briarcliff Entertainment has produced movies such as “The Marksman,” a Liam Neeson thriller, the supernatural suspense film “Don’t Let Go,” and the sports drama biopic “Sweetwater.” On October 11, the independent distributor will be unveiling “The Apprentice,” a biographical drama starring Sebastian Stan as a young Donald Trump.

After receiving a guilty verdict, Michael B. Jordan, known for his Emmy-winning roles in “Lovecraft Country” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” was let go from Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. The 34-year-old actor had been scheduled to appear in upcoming films based on the comic book series, such as “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” which is now titled “Doomsday.” Before the trial, Majors had already parted ways with his management firm, Entertainment 360, and public relations company, the Lede Company. However, he still has representation by the talent agency WME.

Majors strongly refutes the accusations of assault and aims to restart his acting journey in Hollywood. In recent developments, he has been chosen for a role in the upcoming independent film “Merciless,” which will be helmed by Martin Villeneuve, the brother of renowned director Denis Villeneuve.

Deadline Hollywood first reported the news of Briarcliff’s acquisition of “Magazine Dreams.”
